
Former Eskimo Normie Kwong appointed as Alberta\'s Lieutenant Governor

(Edmonton) Former Edmonton Eskimo great Normie Kwong has been appointed Alberta's next Lieutenant Governor.
The "China Clipper" played 13 seasons with Calgary and Edmonton and was twice voted the CFL's Outstanding Canadian in 1955 and '56. Normie finished his glorious career with 9,022 rushing yards, 78 TDs, Teamed with Johnny Bright, Kwong gave the Eskimos a dynamic backfield which resulted in three consecutive Grey Cup wins (1954-55-56). Normie's name was added to the Eskimos Wall of Honour at Commonwealth Stadium in 1983.
Kwong, the first Chinese Canadian to play in the Canadian Football League, was named Canadian Athlete of the Year in 1955 and was inducted into the CFL Hall of Fame in 1969, the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame in 1975 and the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame in 1980. Kwong is also a member of the Order of Canada.
Prime Minister Paul Martin announced the appointment today. "Norman Kwong is an inspiration for many Canadians,'' Martin said in a release. "His many contributions, as a professional athlete, as a business person and as a prominent figure in society, speak to his commitment to the people of Alberta."
