Tucson Snaps Losing Streak With 9-8 Win

June 29, 2004 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Tucson Sidewinders News Release

Sidewinders hold Salt Lake in check enough to snap 4-game losing streak. LHP Mark Freed (2-1) earned the win in his best outing of the year by hurling 3 scoreless innings, allowing only 1 runner to reach base. RHP Greg Jones (1-2) took the loss as he entered into a tie game and gave up the go-ahead run, a solo blast to left by DH Kyle Nichols, his first of the season. RHP Mike Fetters worked the ninth for his first save of the year, and 100th in his professional career.

The Sidewinders' busted out of their slump with 13 hits, 6 of them went for extra bases. 3B Brian Barden could have had his own highlight reel as he went 4-4 with a 2B and a 3B, driving in 4 runners in the process. Other quality nights included RF Josh Kroeger (2-4, R, 2B, RBI, BB), SS Jerry Gil (2-4, 2B, RBI), and CF Julio Ramirez (2-4, 2 R, RBI). Starting pitcher RHP Edgar Gonzalez, coming off 5 straight quality starts avoided the loss despite allowing 8 ER on 9 hits, 4 being HR's, in 5 innings.

For Salt Lake, 3B Dallas McPherson had 2 home runs once again. With the 2 he hit in last night's contest, he now has 5 home runs in 25 at bats since being called up from Double-A. His 1st home run was the backend of a back-to-back-to-back job the Stingers accomplished against Gonzalez in the 4th. 1B Casey Kotchman and LF Adam Riggs were the other Stingers involved in the trio of bombs.

The win gave Tucson their 42nd win of the year, and they now stand at 42-36. The loss dropped the Stingers to 31-48, good for the cellar in the Northern division. 3,464 came out on to the ballpark on Margarita Monday. The game lasted 2:49. Probables for the final game of the home stand feature Salt Lake's RHP Chris Bootcheck (4-6, 5.40) facing Tucson's LHP Jon Cannon (4-4, 4.74). Game time will be 7:00 PM.
