Edmonton Elks News Release

(Edmonton) The defending Grey Cup champion Edmonton Eskimos officially announced today the signing of veteran defensive lineman Steve Charbonneau. In keeping with club policy, terms of the deal have not been released.

Matching his previous season’s output of 25 defensive tackles, the 30 year-old lineman was a consistent force on the defence in 2003 and also contributed 2 pass knock downs, 2 sacks and 2 tackles for a loss. His best performance came in Winnipeg (Oct. 25/03) where he recorded 4 tackles and 1 pass knockdown. Charbonneau played a significant role in the 2003 Grey Cup victory over Montreal with 2 defensive tackles, 1 special teams tackle, 2 pass knockdowns and a sack.

“Steve is a major contributor on defence and we are thrilled, and a bit surprised, that we have been able to get him back. The fact that he is Canadian really gives us some options on both sides of the ball,” said Head Coach Tom Higgins.
