Galaxy on the Clock for MLS Superdraft

PASADENA, CA (Monday, January 13, 2003) - The 2002 MLS Cup Champion Los Angeles Galaxy will participate in MLS' 2003 SuperDraft this week, which is slated for Friday, January 17 at 12:30 p.m. (PT) in Kansas City, MO. The Galaxy, who holds six picks, have two first round selections with 8th (via Colorado) and 10th picks. Los Angeles acquired the 8th overall selection from the Colorado Rapids as part of the Robin Fraser trade on April 2, 2001.

The Galaxy also hold a pick in four of the five remaining rounds of the SuperDraft, giving Los Angeles the 20th (via DC, LA), 40th, 50th and 60th overall picks in the SuperDraft. L.A. acquired its own second round selection from the Chris Albright trade (1/11/02) back from D.C. United in the Henry Zambrano trade on August 15, 2002. The third round marks the only round during which Los Angeles does not have a pick, after trading it to the MetroStars for Winston Griffiths on April 20, 2002.

Last year's draft selections netted the Galaxy eight players, despite not having a first round pick, from the MLS SuperDraft held in Orlando, FL. Los Angeles selected Hemir Neibles (13th overall), Bryheem Hancock (22nd overall), Gavin Glinton (25th overall) Alejandro Moreno (27th overall), Corey Gibbs (38th overall) Noah Delgado (48th overall), Lawrence Smalls (59th overall), and Ishmael Mintah (69th overall). Only two of the above mentioned draft picks, Glinton and Moreno, are currently on the Galaxy's roster.

The Galaxy is scheduled to reconvene January 29, in preparation for Spring Training and the upcoming 2003 season, which will open on April 5 vs. the Columbus Crew at Crew Stadium. Following a league record eight-game road trip, the Galaxy will open its new home The Home Depot Center on Saturday, June 7 vs. the Colorado Rapids.
