Zuercher Records Second Straight Shutout as Tornadoes Top Federals 8-0

August 4, 2011 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
Worcester Tornadoes News Release

Zach Zuercher dealt his second straight complete game shutout as the Tornadoes defeated the New York Federals 8-0 at the HIP on Thursday afternoon. Alex Trezza continued his hot hitting with a grand slam (just two days removed from a 5-for-6, cycle-worthy performance).

Zuercher threw just 84 pitches and faced the minimum 27 batters in his nine innings of work. The Tornadoes' lefty starter struck seven Federalls hitters out and allowed three hits. He has now thrown 22 straight scoreless innings against New York, dating back to the fourth inning of his first start against them this season.

The Tornadoes scored the only run they would need in the bottom of the second. Brendon Kelliher reached on a single (one of two for him in the game), took second on Tony Patane's single, and scored on the throwing error by Jacob Rosenbeck with Ryan Crespi at the plate. Crespi knocked Kelliher in for an RBI in the fourth, when the right fielder knocked the baserunner in with a single.

Worcester notched six runs in the seventh inning, which was the second game in a row they have scored that many in one frame. Abraham Nunez hit a double to score the first run, Chris Colabello recorded an infield single for the second, and Trezza took care of the rest with his four-run four-bagger.

The loss went to Luis Pardo, who allowed just two runs (one earned) in five innings. He is (0-3) against the Tornadoes this season, and the Federals are 0-4 in his starts versus the central Massachusetts club.

With the win, Worcester improved to 12-5 in the second half of the season and currently stands one game ahead of the Brockton Rox, who lost Wednesday night while the Tornadoes were idle (from a rain out at Rockland).

Ed RIley's team is 9-1 against Scott Nathanson & Company in what will be a 13-game season series. Game two of the present four-game set will be on Friday at 7:05pm. The gates open at 6:00, and there will be fireworks after the game. Tornadoes Pre-Game Live on USTREAM begins at 6:50.
