Z's Top 'Birds as West Tosses Gem

New Orleans Baby Cakes News Release
Sean West pitched a five-hit shutout, and Scott Cousins homered to provide the only run of the game in a 1-0 Zephyrs win over the Memphis Redbirds as the Z's took the opener of a four-game series Tuesday night.
West (4-3) walked three and struck out four over his nine innings, throwing 119 pitches, 83 of which were strikes. He is the first Zephyr to throw a complete game, nine-inning shutout since Clay Hensley at Omaha on August 29, 2009.
With Memphis starter P.J. Walters matching West zero for zero most of the night, Cousins broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the third inning with a solo shot to right-center field, his eighth home run of the year and fifth in the month of July.
In the top of the ninth, West walked Amaury Cazana with one out, but induced Donovan Solano to ground into a game-ending double play.
Walters (4-3) was the hard-luck loser for the Redbirds, as the Cousins home run was the only hit he allowed over six innings.
The Zephyrs tallied just one other hit on the night, as Cameron Maybin led off the seventh inning with an infield single against reliever Oneli Perez. Maybin was making his first appearance after missing 23 games on the disabled list.
The Zephyrs and Redbirds continue their four-game tilt tomorrow evening at Zephyr Field. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 pm, as Z's righty Rick VandenHurk (7-4, 5.06) takes on Memphis southpaw Ryan Kulik (1-1, 5.96).
