Z's Scortch 'Birds for 9 in First, Win 10-1

July 28, 2010 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
New Orleans Baby Cakes News Release

Fueled by nine runs in the bottom of the first inning and the second complete game in as many nights, the New Orleans Zephyrs defeated the Memphis Redbirds 10-1 on Wednesday night.

With two outs in the bottom of the first, New Orleans plated nine consecutive batters. Mark Saccomanno started the scoring, lacing a two-run double to give NOLA their first lead of the game.

After Brett Carroll reached on an error and Gookie Dawkins and Chris Hatcher notched back-to-back walks, Z's pitcher Rick VandenHurk and Scott Cousins each drew bases loaded walks.

Leading 5-0, Cameron Maybin wasted little time smashing a grand slam in his second at-bat in the inning. The home run was Maybin's first of the year with New Orleans.

VandenHurk shined for the Z's, improving to 8-4 by allowing seven hits and one walk while striking out eight in his second complete game of the season.

Joe Mather contributed the lone offensive production for Memphis, hitting his fourth home run of the year in the top of the ninth inning to break up the Zephyrs' bid for consecutive shutouts.

Ryan Kulik (1-2) took the loss as he was charged with eight runs, all of them unearned. The Redbirds committed two errors in the first inning, and four on the night.

The Zephyrs and 'Birds continue their four-game tilt tomorrow from Zephyr Field, as first pitch is scheduled for 7:00 pm. Righty Brian Lawrence (9-7, 4.87) squares off for the Z's against fellow right-handed pitcher Brandon Dickson (9-6, 3.07).
