September 4, 2006 - The New Orleans Zephyrs defeated the Memphis Redbirds 6-4 on Monday, finishing the season at 72-71 - their first winning record since 2002.
Starting pitcher Kip Bouknight (3-0) got the win after giving up four runs on six hits in 5.2 innings. Bouknight also drove in two runs at the plate. Reliever Roy Corcoran picked up save #11 on the year, no-hitting the Redbirds in the final frame.
Center fielder Marlon Byrd went 2-4 with two RBI to lead the Zephyrs offensively. Catcher Russ Cleveland went 2-4 in the game as well.
For the Redbirds, starting pitcher Ricardo Rodriguez (3-3) recorded the loss, allowing six runs (five earned) on eight hits in five innings.
The win gives the Zephyrs a 3-1 series win. The team will not participate in post-season play, with division leader Round Rock clinching a post-season bid earlier in the season.
With an announced attendance of 3,915 the Zephyrs finish with a total attendance of 361,493 in 2006. This is the second-straight year that the Zephyrs have increased their attendance from the previous year.
