Max Scherzer struck out seven batters in three innings of work, and three Tucson relievers combined for eight more strikeouts as the New Orleans Zephyrs fell to the Sidewinders 5-3 on Thursday night. Scherzer allowed just one hit in his three innings, and struck out the side in the third to cap his seven-strikeout performance.

Meanwhile, Zephyrs starter Ruddy Lugo struggled with his command, surrendering three runs in the second when he gave up two hits, two walks, hit a batter, and threw a wild pitch.

Josh Whitesell led off the third inning with his 21st home run, giving Tucson a 4-0 advantage.

Lugo (7-10) took the loss after yielding five runs on five hits in seven innings. He struck out five and walked four.

The Zephyrs cut the lead in half on a two-run homer by Valentino Pascucci in the fourth, also his 21st home run of the year.

Gustavo Molina added a solo shot in the seventh inning, his sixth of the year, to account for the Zephyrs offense, whose 15 strikeouts were the most since fanning 16 times against Nashville on April 14, 2007.

The third game of the series is Friday at 7:00 p.m., with RHP Brian Stokes facing RHP Matt Torra.
