Iowa Cubs News Release
Jason Stanford tossed five shutout innings in his Iowa Cubs debut as the Iowa Cubs defeated the Colorado Springs Sky Sox 8-1 at Principal Park Thursday night.
Stanford (1-0), signed by the Cubs Wednesday, after stints with Columbus, Buffalo, and Tijuana, picked up the win in his debut going five innings, allowing just four hits while striking out six.
The left-hander was given an early lead, as the I-Cubs broke out for six runs in the first inning, tying a season-high for an opening frame. Felix Pie started the scoring spree with a lead-off triple over the head of Sky Sox center fielder Chris Frey. Iowa took a 1-0 lead when Bobby Scales drove in Pie with an RBI single up the middle. Micah Hoffpauir made it three straight hits for Iowa when he lined a base hit to center field, moving Scales to third.
Colorado starter Mark Redman didn't record his first out until he got Iowa's fourth hitter of the inning, Casey McGehee to ground into a fielder's choice, scoring Scales for a 2-0 Iowa lead. The Cubs continued their hitting against Redman as Matt Craig connected on a one-out single and Koyie Hill followed with a double to left field, driving in McGehee and Craig to build up a 4-0 I-Cubs lead. After a visit to the mound, Josh Kroeger added the I-Cubs second triple of the inning, driving in Hill with a shot to right field for a 5-0 Iowa lead. Luis Figueroa drove in Kroeger with a sacrifice fly to make it 6-0.
The Sky Sox posted their only run in the sixth off Iowa reliever Justin Berg, when the right-hander issued a lead off walk to Joe Koshansky. Koshansky took third on a single by Matt Miller and scored on a fielder's choice by Humberto Cota to trim Iowa's lead to 6-1.
Iowa added its eighth and final run of the night when Figueroa connected for his second homer of the year off Colorado reliever Cedrick Bowers to make it 8-1.
McGehee, Kroger, and Figueroa each had two hits in the win. Pie, who had one hit, left in the first inning with sore hand.
Redman took the loss (6-3), giving up six runs on nine hits in just five innings of work.
