Metairie, LA - Former Tulane University standout Micah Owings will be starting for the Tucson Sidewinders against the New Orleans Zephyrs, it was announced Thursday.

Owings, recently sent to Tucson from the Arizona Diamondbacks, will be making his first start of the season for the Sidewinders.

The 25-year-old earned Conference USA Player of the Year honors in helping the Green Wave reach the 2005 College World Series. Owings batted .354 that season, with a team-leading 18 home runs and 54 runs batted in.

He was drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the third round of the 2005 First-Year Player Draft, made his major league debut on April 6, 2007, and went on to go 8-8 with a 4.30 ERA in his rookie season. On April 30 of this year, Owings hit a two-run, pinch-hit home run, the first pinch-hit homer by a pitcher in the majors in more than four years.

Saturday's game is scheduled for 6:00 p.m., with Owings facing Zephyrs right-hander Nelson Figueroa. For more information and to purchase tickets, please call the Zephyrs at (504) 734-5155.
