Huntsville, AL --- Pete Zoccolillo homered three times as Huntsville buried Carolina 11-2 to even the series at Joe Davis Stadium on Friday night. Zoccolillo homered in the third inning against Matt Roney (L, 3-6), then twice in two at-bats against Doug Thompson in the sixth and eighth innings respectively.
Roney made 105 pitches in four innings, allowing nine hits and six runs.
Huntsville (31-29) scored a first inning run in the first on a single by Jeff Deardorff, then pushed across four runs in the third and another in the fourth.
Raleigh-native Paul Stewart (W, 11-9) earned the win by pitching five innings, allowing two runs and fanning eight.
Stewart retired the first eight batters he faced before Roney doubled past centerfielder Dave Krynzel in the third.
Kevin Burford accounted for Carolina's lone RBI, on a pinch-hit infield single in the fifth inning.
Thompson saved the Mudcats (24-36) bullpen by pitching the final four innings, fanning five and allowing five runs (four earned).
The Mudcats were officially eliminated from the second half race with the loss.
Robert Averette (1-4) starts Saturday night against Huntsville lefty Luis Martinez at 8:05 PM ET at Joe Davis Stadium.
