Zephyrs Score Four in Eighth to Defeat Redbirds, 4-1

Metairie, LA – Adam Everett was 2-4 with 2 RBI to lead the New Orleans Zephyrs (14-12) past the Memphis Redbirds (8-19) 4 to 1 on Wednesday afternoon at Zephyr Field in front of 9,841.

Memphis took a 1-0 lead in the fifth as Jed Hansen hit a solo home run off Zephyrs starter Kirk Saarloos. The game would stay that way until the eighth inning as David Matranga led off the inning with a double off Redbirds starter Nerio Rodriguez. Rodriguez then hit Alan Zinter, who was pinch hitting for Saarloos. Eric Bruntlett followed with a sacrifice bunt but Rodriguez threw to third as Matranga beat the throw to load the bases.

Everett would line the 1-2 pitch from Rodriguez into center field scoring Matranga and Zinter. Bruntlett would score on a wild pitch by Gabe Molina who had relieved Rodriguez. Everett would score the final run of the inning on a single from John Buck.

Saarloos (3-0) picked up the win pitching eight innings allowing one run on three hits while walking none. Miguel Saladin would pitch the ninth for his first save of the season. Rodriguez (1-1) suffered the loss pitching seven innings allowing four runs on six hits striking out six while walking none.

Pitcher Bob Scanlan was added to the Zephyrs roster prior to the game. Scanlan was 0- 0 with a 0.00 ERA (O ER/ 3IP) in four relief appearances for Round Rock. He pitched for the Zephyrs in 1995, 1998 and 1999 compiling a 13-20 record with a 5.82 ERA (153 ER/236.2 IP) in 45 games (43 starts)
