Edmonton Trappers News Release
Edwards Guzman homered and drove in two runs as the Edmonton Trappers salvaged a split of a doubleheader Wednesday night at TELUS Field with a 5-3 win over the East Division leading Nashville Sounds. The Sounds won the first game of the twinbill 5-1 in eight innings. The Trappers have won two of the first three games in this series and have been victorious in 10 of their last 15 contests. Edmonton has played three doubleheaders this season and managed a split of the two games in each of the double dips. Edmonton and Nashville conclude this four game series on Thursday afternoon at TELUS Field. The game begins at 12:05 PM. The Trappers begin a four-game series against the Tucson Sidewinders on Friday night at TELUS Field.
The first game was a pitcher's duel featuring Nashville's Mark Guerrier and Edmonton's Sun Woo Kim (2-2). Kim allowed only one hit through the first three innings. Guerrier was even more effective in the early going, retiring the first eight batters he faced before yielding a two-out single to Kim in the third. The Sounds finally broke through with a run in the fifth inning. With two down and runners on the corners Mike Gulan grounded to third, but Scott Hodges' throw was in the dirt, allowing Tike Redman to score the game's first run. With two out and Anthony Medrano at second in the bottom of the frame Kim singled to shallow right field. The right fielder, J.J. Davis, booted the ball allowing Medrano to score. Barnes led off the top of the eight with his fourth home run to give the Sounds the lead for good. Reliever Pat Mahomes followed later in the inning with a two-run double and Davis scored on a wild pitch to round out the scoring.
Edmonton took the early lead in the second game on a two-out home run by Guzman in the bottom of the first inning. Mario Encarnacion followed with a single and moved to second when Valentino Pascucci drew a walk. Matt Cepicky then singled to right field, plating Encarnacion with the second run of the game. Edmonton picked up two more runs in the third inning. Hodges led off the frame with a single and moved to second on a base hit by Guzman. Encarnacion drew a walk to load the bases and Pascucci greeted reliever Justin Reid with a two-run single to give Edmonton a four-run lead. Barnes led off the Nashville fourth inning with a double and scored on a two-base hit by Gulan. With two out and two on Tomas De La Rosa doubled, scoring both runners to pull the Sounds to within one run of the lead. Damon Buford led off the bottom half of the inning with a double, stole second and scored on a ground out by Guzman to round out the scoring.
