Zephyrs Edge Sounds to Avoid Sweep

The New Orleans Zephyrs five through eight batters combined to go 7-for-15 with a home run and five RBI to beat the Nashville Sounds, 5-4 on Tuesday afternoon at Zephyr Field, avoiding a four-game sweep.

After Nashville scored six runs in the first inning each of the previous two nights, the Sounds again jumped on the Zephyrs early, but this time only for two runs on a Brett Carroll two-run homer.

The Zephyrs answered in the bottom of the frame when Chris Aguila doubled down the left field line, putting runners in scoring position for Josh Kroeger, who singled in two runs to tie the game.

Kroeger extended his home consecutive on-base streak to 20 games by going 2-for-3 with two RBI.

The Zephyrs took their first lead off the bat of Oscar Salazar, who took the first pitch he saw from Josh Butler in the second inning over the left field wall to give the Z's a one-run lead.

Nashville responded in the third, as the first two batters reached and Jordan Brown later scored on a slow ground ball by Mike Rivera.

New Orleans took the lead for good in the fifth when Butler walked the bases loaded. Butler (3-4) was then replaced after he gave up three runs on eight hits in his five innings.

Ruben Gotay greeted reliever Justin James with a go-ahead RBI single, and Aguila scored two batters later when Jesus Merchan grounded out to the right side.

Chris Sampson (3-0) relinquished the game to the bullpen after he went five innings, giving up three runs on eight hits while striking out five.

Todd Doolittle and Victor Garate held onto the lead by going three innings. Garate gave up a solo home run to Taylor Green in the eighth to bring Nashville within one run.

Jose Ceda took over in the ninth and struck out the side to pick up his league-leading 16th save.

After an off day Wednesday, the Z's return to action on Thursday night at 7 p.m. as they welcome the Memphis Redbirds to New Orleans for a four-game series. Elih Villanueva (4-5) takes the mound for the Zephyrs as he takes on Nick Additon (1-2) for Memphis.
