Iowa Cubs News Release

After erasing a three-run first inning deficit, the Iowa Cubs (27-32) surrendered three runs in the ninth inning and fell to the Omaha Storm Chasers (33-26) 8-6 Tuesday night at Principal Park.

Cubs' reliever Marcos Mateo pitched a scoreless inning in the eight, but allowed a double to Jarrod Dyson and a single to Johnn Giavotella to start the ninth frame. Scott Maine replaced Mateo and struck out David Lough for the first out of the inning. Mike Moustakas then lifted an RBI-double to deep right field to tie the game. After an intentional walk to Clint Robinson, Maine walked in the go-ahead run with Kila Ka'aihue at the plate. A third walk to Joaquin Arias pushed across the third Omaha run of the inning. Blake Parker recorded the final two outs of the inning to stop the Iowa bleeding.

Iowa starter Austin Bibens-Dirkx looked shaky out of the gates as he walked Omaha's leadoff man Dyson to start the game. Lough drove in the first run of the game when he doubled to right field. Dyson scored on the play, and Lough was thrown out by Ty Wright trying to advance to third. Bibens-Dirkx then walked Mike Moustakas with two outs. Robinson followed with a two-run home run, staking Omaha to a 3-0 lead.

Iowa responded with four runs in their half of the first inning. Fernando Perez led off the game reaching on a bunt single. Bobby Sclaes followed with a walk. Bryan LaHair then tied the game with a three-run blast to center field. After back-to-back Iowa strikeouts, Marquez Smith put the Cubs ahead with a towering solo shot to left field. Smith finished the game 5-for-5 with a home run, RBI, and run scored.

Iowa tacked on runs in the second and third innings with solo homers by Bobby Scales and Welington Castillo, respectively. Scales went 4-for-4 on the night with a homer, a walk, an RBI, and two runs. His two runs scored have tied him for fifth on the all-time I-Cubs list with Jim Driscoll at 241.

The Storm Chasers cut the Cubs' lead to one run when they scored two runs off of Esmailin Caridad in the seventh inning. Paulo Orlando walked with one out, and Dyson followed with a single. After getting into scoring position on a double-steal of second and third base, Johnny Giavotella drove them both in with a single. John Gaub entered the game for Iowa and ended the Omaha threat at the time.

Bibens-Dirkx settled into a nice grove after the first, and went on to complete six innings and give the Cubs a quality start. He gave up three runs on five hits, struck out one and walked three. He did not factor in the decision. Mateo (1-2) was charged with the loss, and Maine blew his first save of the season.

Omaha starter Kevin Pucetas received a no-decision as well. He pitched five and two-thirds innings and gave up six runs on 11 hits. He struck out five and walked two. Blake Johnson (3-1) picked up the win after pitching two scoreless innings. He allowed three hits and struck out one.

Following an off-day tomorrow, the Cubs will host the Round Rock Express on Thursday to begin a four-game series. Iowa will send RH Alberto Cabrera (0-1, 8.00) to the mound against RH Tommy Hunter (1-1, 3.38), who is making a Major League rehab start. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
