PORTLAND, ME - Pedro Zapata hammered a two-out solo home run over the Maine Monster in the top of the tenth inning to lead the B-Mets past the Portland Sea Dogs by a 6-5 score at Hadlock Field on Saturday afternoon.
Zapata's blast, his first of the season, capped a game that saw ten combined runs scored over the final three innings. Trailing 1-0 in the eighth, the B-Mets put up five runs against two Portland relievers to take their first lead of the series. Binghamton sent ten men to the plate and compiled six hits, highlighted by a two-run homer by Raul Reyes.
Portland wasted little time to cut into the deficit. Darin Gorski, in his fifth inning serving as a piggy-back starter to Jenrry Mejia, allowed back-to-back home runs in the eight, cutting Binghamton's lead to one. Reynaldo Rodriguez ripped a two-run shot over the Maine Monster and Bryce Brentz followed with a solo liner to left center.
Brad Holt ended the threat by recording two outs, but could not restrain the Portland comeback in the ninth. Derrik Gibson started the inning with a single and scored two batters later on a sac fly from Jeremy Hazelbaker.
After allowing five hits in his first two innings of relief, Will Latimer returned for the tenth and recorded two quick outs before Zapata launched a 1-2 offering over the fence in left. Adrian Rosario, promoted from St. Lucie on Friday, tossed a perfect tenth inning to collect his first save.
It was a game that began as matchup between two hard-throwing righties. Jenrry Mejia took the mound for Binghamton and navigated through three innings in his first start with the B-Mets since August 2010. The righty, rehabbing from Tommy John surgery in May 2011, allowed the leadoff hitter to reach in every frame and surrendered six hits overall. He struck out three and did not issue any walks. Gorski went 4.1 innings in the no-decision, allowing three runs on three hits.
The Binghamton Mets could not break through against Portland starter Stolmy Pimentel. The B-Mets had at least one runner aboard in five innings, but failed to cross home versus the righty. Pimentel matched a season-high by throwing six innings, allowing just four hits and striking out six along the way.
Holt (2-0) collected the win after blowing his first save of the season, while Latimer (1-3) surrendered two runs on six hits over 2.1 innings in the loss. Clay was saddled with his first blown save after allowing four runs on four hits over 1.2 innings. It was Binghamton's first win of the year when trailing after seven innings (1-17).
The B-Mets (20-20) complete the series with a rubber match Sunday afternoon at 1:00 PM. RHP Greg Peavey takes the ball for the B-Mets against RHP Chris Balcom-Miller. The Horizons Federal Credit Union pre-game show begins at 12:45 PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.
