DUBUQUE, Iowa - Dubuque Fighting Saints defenseman Zane Demsey has committed to Miami University of Ohio. The 20-year-old blueliner is amid his second full season at the USHL level, and has turned into one of the most reliable defensemen in the USHL over the course of his time in Dubuque.

Demsey went from a waiver wire claim by the Fighting Saints from the Waterloo Black Hawks in January to one of the most effective shutdown defensemen in the league. In 61 games at the USHL level, Demsey has scored 3 goals and 10 assists. His +19 mark this season leads the league. In fact, Demsey has either been a plus or an even rating in 18 of 20 games this season.

The Michigan native started his junior career in the North American Hockey League. He played 29 games with the Chippewa Steel, and then finished the 2019-20 season with the Minnesota Wilderness.

Demsey, on committing to Miami: It was the right choice for me after visiting their campus and meeting with their staff. It's a competitive program that plays a style I think I can really grow in.

GM Kalle Larsson: Zane is a consummate professional in everything he does. He's a reliable team member on and off the ice and the way he earned this opportunity at Miami speaks volumes of his character.

Head coach Greg Brown: Zane has had an excellent first few months of the season. We are extremely happy for him that he was rewarded for his strong play with a commitment from Miami. Zane will be a great addition to the RedHawks both on and off the ice next fall.

The RedHawks play in the ultra-competitive NCHC with some of the top programs in the entire college hockey scope. The Fighting Saints have seen their fair share of alumni go to Miami, including Gordie Green, Riley Barber, and currently, Scott Corbett and P.J. Fletcher. Miami has been to the NCAA Tournament 10 times in the past 17 years. They are led by third-year head coach Chris Bergeron.
