Zach Cone Named Cal League Player of the Week

ADELANTO, Calif. - On Monday, Outfielder Zach Cone of the High Desert Mavericks, Advanced-A affiliate of the Texas Rangers, was named Player of the Week for June 8-14 by Minor League Baseball after collecting five home runs in four straight games. Cone, the 37th overall pick in the 2011 First Year Player Draft, went 11-for-21 (.524) with five home runs, three doubles, 12 RBI's, and seven runs scored in his last five games. Over the same period of time, he extended his hitting streak to five games.

Cone missed almost the entire 2013 season after an Achilles tendon injury, competing in just seven games with 26 at bats. Last season, the Georgia-native posted a .207/.313/.356 slash line across three Class A levels (Short season Northwest, Low-A South Atlantic, Advanced-A Carolina). Now healthy and consistent with at bats, Zach has improved in the 2015 season with a slash line of .303/.354/.529 in 60 games.

He is the third Mavericks player in the last five weeks to be named Player of the Week in the California League. Teammate Alex Burg (Week of May 11-17) earned his Player of the Week honor after going 9-for-22 in six games with four doubles, 3 homers and 11 RBI's. Mavericks starter Richelson Pena (Week of May 18-24) earned his bid on the list after taking a perfect game against Bakersfield into the seventh inning which was ended on an error and a line-drive single, tallying seven innings in the game, giving up a lone hit and striking out six.

The Mavericks, who are 2.5 games out of first place in the California League, take on division leader Rancho Cucamonga, affiliate of the Los Angeles Dodgers, starting tonight at 7:05 p.m. at LoanMart Field.

Zach Cone and his Mavericks' teammates arrive back at Heritage Field to begin the second half of the season on Thursday, June 25 with a four-game set against the Visalia Rawhide, affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks.
