Giants Begin Three-Game Series At Modesto Tonight

The San Jose Giants continue their road trip this evening with the opener of a three-game series against the Modesto Nuts at John Thurman Field. San Jose is 4-2 versus the Nuts this season. The Giants lost two out of three at Modesto from May 12-14 before sweeping the Nuts in a three-game series at Municipal Stadium a week later (May 19-21).

Offensive Surge

The Giants have scored 47 runs over their last five games (9.4 runs per game). San Jose's 14 runs in Saturday's victory at High Desert established a new season-high (previous high: 12 runs on Thursday versus the Mavericks). The Giants have also hit nine home runs in their last five games (after one homer in their previous nine games). San Jose's team batting average of .269 is at its highest since April 22 (.271).

Road Struggles

The Giants are 11-21 away from Municipal Stadium this season "" the worst road record in the league. San Jose has yet to win a road series in 2015. The Giants' team ERA on the road is 5.05, compared to 2.98 at home. San Jose split four games at High Desert to begin the current the road trip. The Giants are 4-3 in their last seven road games overall.

Six Giants Named To All-Star Team

Six San Jose Giants were named to the California League All-Star team last week. Pitchers Tyler Beede, Chase Johnson, Keury Mella and Dan Slania, second baseman Austin Slater and outfielder Hunter Cole will represent the Giants in the June 23 California-Carolina League All-Star Game in Rancho Cucamonga (Beede will not participate due to his promotion to Double-A Richmond). The six selections are the most of any team in the California League. Beede (2nd, 2.24) and Johnson (7th, 3.23) both rank among the top seven in the league in ERA while Slania is second with 11 saves. Cole (.340, 5 HR, 33 RBI) leads the league in batting average. Slater (.305, 3 HR, 34 RBI) leads the Giants in hits (69), doubles (14) and RBI's. Mella owns a 2.76 ERA in 10 starts this season.

Cole Extends Hitting Streak To Nine Games

Hunter Cole brings a season-high nine-game hitting streak into tonight's contest. During the hit streak, Cole is batting at a .368 clip (14-for-38) with two triples, two home runs and nine RBI's.

Improving Record

The Giants are 15-10 (.600) since falling to a season-high 14 games under .500 (12-26) on May 18.

Tommy Hanson To Start Tonight's Series Opener

Tommy Hanson has joined the San Jose Giants from Extended Spring Training and is slated to start tonight's series opener at Modesto. Hanson has spent five years in the major leagues with the Braves (2009-12) and Angels (2013). He owns a career big league record of 49-35 with a 3.80 ERA in 121 starts. Hanson finished third in the National League Rookie of the Year Award voting in 2009. Hanson spent last season in the White Sox organization and was 3-5 with a 6.16 ERA in 10 starts for Triple-A Charlotte. Hanson signed a minor league contract with the San Francisco Giants on May 13 and will be making his season debut tonight.

Trouble In The Field

The Giants have committed 81 errors this season "" tops in the California League (Bakersfield next-closest with 75). San Jose's 56 unearned runs this season are second-most in the league.

Slater Sizzles

Over his last five games, Austin Slater is 12-for-24 (.500) with a home run and 10 RBI's. The hot streak has raised Slater's season batting average from .282 to .305. More recently, Slater has seven hits in his last ten at-bats.

League Rankings

The Giants are third in the California League in team batting average (.269) and third in ERA (3.99).

Sub-.500 First Half

Last night's loss guaranteed the Giants (27-36) will finish the first half with a sub-.500 record for the second straight season (34-36 last year). Prior to last season, San Jose had 10 straight winning first halves (2004-2013).

The Modesto Nuts, an affiliate of the Colorado Rockies, are in third place in the North Division with a 30-33 record.
