St. George RoadRunners News Release
ST. GEORGE - The Yuma Scorpions got a quality start from a familiar arm Wednesday night and all the offense they would need in the first three inning to defeat the host St. George RoadRunners 12-6.
Jorge Perez (3-2) picked up his second consecutive victory over the RoadRunners scattering two earned runs over six innings while striking out seven. Perez allowed an RBI single to St. George shortstop Brandon Taylor in the first and plated Jason Bryan with a wild pitch in the fifth.
Aaron Wilson, the former Scorpions, was not as lucky in his second look at Yuma. The Scorpions scored three runs off Wilson in the opening frame. Maikal Jova singled in Henry Calderon, Jeremy Cleveland singled in A.J. Valentine and a grounder from Jose Rodriguez scored Jova. RoadRunners left-fielder Claudio Arias saved a run by nailing Cleveland at home trying to score on a Hector Bernal single.
Yuma got four more in the third beginning with a Rodriguez two-run blast to right. Pete Farina and Ryan Barba would add back-to-back RBI doubles to pad the Scorps lead.
The advantage moved to 9-1 with a Jova RBI single in the fourth and a Barba sac-fly plating Bernal in the fifth.
Wilson (0-1) allowed nine earned runs on 14 Yuma safeties in five innings.
St. George reliever Chris Hunter surrendered two runs in the Yuma seventh. Rich Janeway had an RBI sacrifice followed immediately by a Calderon run-scoring single to push the Yuma lead to 11-2.
Mike Done was charged with an unearned run in the visiting ninth when Barba, who advanced on a two-base error earlier in the frame, scored on a Calderon single.
The RoadRunners tried to stage a comeback, but fell short. Trever Dimick would cross home in the seventh after Greg Lemon beat out a potential inning-ending double play. Nowlin homered to lead-off the eighth, his fourth of the year. Arias tripled and scored on a grounder later in the inning. Ryan Stevenson started the ninth with a triple down the line in right and scored when Yuma reliever James Garcia balked out of the windup. Garcia retired the next three batters to quell any comeback attempt.
Yuma had 20 hits on the night paced by Bernal's four singles and three hits a piece from Farina, Barba and Calderon. St. George had 10 hits featuring Stevenson's three and two from Nowlin & Dimick.
In the series, St. George scored 44 runs while Yuma had 43. The Scorpions lead the overall season series four games to two.
The RoadRunners take the field on Thursday by welcoming the defending GBL champion Chico Outlaws for the first game of a three-game series. St. George will start the newly-acquired Mac Nelson, a Southern Utah University product making his professional debut. Nelson finished the 2008 season with a 7-2 record with a 2.93 ERA. The Outlaws are expected to counter with righty Berek Fasking (1-2, 5.74 ERA).
First pitch on Thirsty Thursday in set for 7:05pm. Bring the family and enjoy dollar soft drinks the entire evening.
Tickets for the entire series with Chico can be purchased at the RoadRunners office at 216 W. St. George Blvd, on the RoadRunners hotline at 673-5333, online at StGeorgeRoadRunners.com or at the Bruce Hurst Field box office beginning at 6pm.
