Calgary Vipers News Release
The Calgary Vipers gave up 22 hits in losing 13-11 to the Reno Silver Sox at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta. The Silver Sox got the leadoff man on base in all nine innings and scored at least a run in each frame as well. With the victory Reno stole the series from the Vipers with 25 combined runs over the final two victories.
Leading off the game in the top of the first inning Ryan Crespi and Carlos Madrid went back-to-back with solo homeruns to put Reno ahead 2-0.
Calgary responded in the bottom of the inning as Jorge Mejia reached on a bloop double into shallow right field and Darryl Brinkley smashed his fourth long ball of the season to tie the game at two.
Another solo homerun was hit by Steven Alexander in the top of the second inning to give the Silver Sox back the lead at 3-2.
Reno added to the lead an inning later with a leadoff double from Madrid and a RBI single by Ross McCoy. After a Juan Senreiso base hit McCoy scored on a Brett Flowers RBI groundout for the 5-2 advantage.
The Silver Sox scored for the fourth straight inning in the top of the fourth with a leadoff walk to D.J. Dixon, sacrifice bunt by Andre Alvarado, single from Shaughn Neal, and a infield single by Madrid.
In the top of the fifth inning Senreiso doubled and scored on a Dixon double for the 7-2 lead.
The Vipers responded in the bottom of the inning with a walk to Patrick Arlis and a RBI triple from Travis Drader. Drew Miller knocked in Drader with a RBI double and Felix Jose plated Miller with a single to cut the lead to 7-5.
Reno continued the scoring in the top of the sixth inning with a leadoff double by Crespi and a RBI single from Senreiso for the 8-5 advantage.
Arlis nailed a solo homerun in the bottom of the inning to bring Calgary once again within two runs at 8-6.
Alexander hit his second leadoff homerun of the game in the top of the seventh inning to get that run right back. After walks to Dixon and Neal, Madrid made the score 10-6 with a RBI single.
In the bottom of the inning Brinkley singled, Miller was hit by a pitch, and after a wild pitch, Jose popped up a sacrifice fly for a RBI.
Five straight singles in the top of eighth inning by Senreiso, Flowers, Alexander, Dixon, and Alvarado scored two more tallies for the 12-7 advantage. Dixon and Alvarado both picked up runs batted in.
Back came the Snakes in the bottom of the inning with three straight base hits of their own by Tang, Arlis, and Drader with a RBI. Arlis ended up scoring from third base on a wild pitch for the 12-9 score.
Crespi leadoff the ninth inning with a single and after stealing second base scored on a Madrid base hit for the 13-9 lead.
Finally in the bottom of the ninth inning Jose Morban reached on a fielding error by first baseman Alexander and Tang walked to put two runners on. A wild pitch moved both runners up a base and then another wild pitch scored Morban from third and when Giorgio Fuda dropped the baseball covering home plate, Tang also scored to bring the Vipers within two runs yet again at 13-11. This is as close as Calgary came, leaving the potential tying run on base for the second straight game.
Steve Russell (3-3) recorded the win in going six innings while Jordy Alexander (3-2) took the loss in lasting three and a third innings. Eduardo De La Cruz (0-1-3) recorded his second save in as many nights.
Mejia and Miller both reached base for the 28th game consecutively to start the season while Miller extended his hitting streak to 17 games. Brinkley extended his hitting streak to 13 contests.
Former Major Leaguer Steve Yeager and his Long Beach Armada now come into town and like the Silver Sox are making their first appearance at Foothills Stadium. Friday June 27th at 7:05 PM (MDT) the series kicks off with Ryan Schurman (1-0) making his Foothills Stadium debut on the mound. Joe Sergent (1-0) will also make his first start as a Snake at home in the middle game of the series on Saturday June 28th at 5:05 PM (MDT) and the three game set concludes Sunday June 29th at 1:35 PM (MDT) with Evan Greusel (5-0) taking the ball.
