Chico Outlaws News Release
FULLERTON, CA - For the third straight night, the Orange County Flyers used a big inning to decide their game with the Chico Outlaws - Wednesday it was a six-run 2nd inning that propelled the Flyers to their fifth straight win, a 10-6 triumph and a sweep of the three-game series at Goodwin Field on the Cal State Fullerton campus.
The Outlaws grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the 1st on three consecutive two-out singles by Casey Garrison, Jose Valdez and Julian Benavidez. Orange County tied it up in the bottom of the 1st when Mark Okano led off the inning with his league-leading 13th homer. Chico went back in front 2-1 in the 2nd when Steve Boggs singled home Jesse Kovacs...but in the bottom of the 2nd the Flyers responded with "the big inning" - an error, walk and hit batter loaded the bases with two outs...Outlaws starter Trevor Caughey then walked Okano to force home the tying run; Dave Bacani drew a free pass to allow Josh Arhart to score and give Orange County a 3-2 lead...then four pitches later Jermy Acey bombed a grand slam over the left-center field wall to put the Flyers up 7-2.
Chico continued to put up runs, but only one per inning - in the 3rd Benavidez doubled home Valdez and in the 4th Eric Pringle knocked in Kovacs with a base hit to left to whittle Orange County's lead to 7-4...but in the 5th Morales smacked a solo homer off Caughey to make the score 8-4. The Outlaws pulled to within two with single runs in the 6th (Matt Ceriani scoring on a Boggs RBI single) and 7th (Valdez tripled and came home on a Benavidez single), but that would be as close as Chico would get...Arhart added two big insurance runs in the 8th when he homered off Outlaws reliever Todd Gelatka with a man aboard...newly-signed Jesse Smith then shut the door on the Outlaws, retiring the last eight batters he faced to lock down the win - the Flyers sixth straight over Chico without a loss this season.
Orange County starter Charles Merricks (3-0) went five innings to pick up the win with Smith notching his first save of the year...Caughey (2-2) took the loss for Chico. The Outlaws actually outhit the Flyers 13-6...Valdez, Boggs and Benavidez each had three hits to pace Chico, with Kovacs going 2-for-4. Despite the impressive offensive showing, the Outlaws dropped their fourth in a row to fall to 9-19 on the season; Orange County improved to a league-best 21-6. Chico continues its 10-game road trip Thursday with the first of three against the St. George Roadrunners at Bruce Hurst Field...right-hander Berek Fasking (1-2) will start for the Outlaws in the series opener, with righty Shannon Sprouse (1-2) expected to go for St. George. First pitch is 6:05pm Pacific time...hear all the action with Rory Miller calling the play-by-play on ESPN Radio 101.7 FM and AM 1340; the game can also be heard on-line at www.ChicoOutlawsBaseball.com.
