Adirondack Phantoms News Release
BINGHAMTON, NY - Patrick Maroon and Jonathon Kalinski scored second-period goals and Scott Munroe made 36 saves to lift the Philadelphia Phantoms past the Binghamton Senators 3-1 in a crucial East Division win for the visiting team. With the victory, Philadelphia pulled within six points of Binghamton in the race for the final playoff spot in the division, while still holding two games in hand.
Jared Ross started the scoring when he put the Phantoms on the board with just over five minutes to go in the first period. Ross had the puck in the slot and got off a shot that was partially blocked, but still fluttered over the shoulder of goaltender Jeff Glass, who appeared screened (sorry) on the play. Ross's tally gave the Phantoms a 1-0 lead at the first intermission.
The lead grew to 3-0 during the second period thanks to some outstanding efforts by Philadelphia's rookies. In the first minute of the period, Andreas Nodl went after Binghamton defenseman Matt Taormina on a forecheck behind the Senators net, stole the puck and fed it in front for Kalinski, who put it directly behind Glass just 54 seconds in.
Less than five minutes later, Maroon was by himself deep in the Binghamton zone while the Phantoms were conducting a line change. Maroon worked his way off the end boards and past no fewer than three Senators before popping out in front and backhanding one past Glass for an unassisted goal. It gave the Phantoms the three-goal advantage 5:17 into the frame.
The Senators outshot the Phantoms 19-2 in the third period, but could only get one of those shots past Munroe. It came on a power play at 11:12 when Mattias Karlsson fired a slapshot that passed through traffic and appeared to change direction before going past the Phantoms netminder. It was the only dent in an otherwise perfect evening that saw Munroe earn first star honors. Glass absorbed the loss with 21 saves on 24 Philadelphia chances.
The Phantoms now return home for three games this weekend at the Wachovia Spectrum - Toronto on Friday at 7:05, and Grand Rapids on Saturday at 7:05 and on Sunday at 5:05.
There are just six regular season games remaining at the Wachovia Spectrum. Adult tickets are just $10 and kids tickets just $5 for the remainder of the 2008-09 season. Tickets are going fast for the final game on Friday, April 10 against the Hershey Bears. Tickets are available through ComcastTIX at 1-800-298-4200, at the Wachovia Complex box office or online at Phantomshockey.com.
