Youth Movement: Marcus Kearsey

December 21, 2022 - Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL)
Charlottetown Islanders News Release

A youth movement has taken over the Islanders locker room and among the fresh faces is promising rookie defenseman Marcus Kearsey.

Kearsey is a 16-year-old left-shot defenseman who stands 5'11". Selected 32nd overall in the 2022 QMJHL Draft, the Deer Lake, Newfoundland native has posted 2 goals and 12 assists for 14 points in 31 games.

"I've found the biggest thing off the ice is how you're treated. Between the coaches, equipment managers, and athletic therapists, everyone treats you like a pro." Kearsey commented about the difference between major midget and leaping into the QMJHL.

"Another thing I've noticed is how long the seasons are. Right now we've made it through the first half and I'm just a handful of games away from playing the same amount I did last year. There is more adversity that comes with playing in the QMJHL. Injuries, sickness, and overall fatigue from the number of games have made the transition a little challenging. On the ice, however, I would say the biggest thing is how fast the games are played, you have to make your decision a split second quicker in every area of the ice."

Since returning from Detroit Red Wings camp Kearsey has been paired alongside overage defenseman Jeremie Biakautuka as the team's top defensive pairing. The 232-game veteran has taken on the mentorship role to the Deer Lake, Newfoundland native.

"Jeremie has been the most influential for me. Whether it's a practice, game, or any other activity with our team, he has had a very impactful influence on me" said Kearsey. "Being my D partner, he has taught me a lot when it comes to playing in the Q. In practice, he always gives me a quick tip or assures me we both understand the drill so we can execute in the best form."

With 31 games under his belt, Kearsey will spend the holiday break preparing for the back half of his rookie season.

"Overall consistency in all areas of my game is the main thing I want to improve on" stated Kearsey. "I also believe the little things involving defensive game such as box outs, one-on-one battles, and making a good first pass are all aspects of my game I'd like to keep getting better at."

Away from the rink, Marcus is enjoying all the great things Charlottetown and Prince Edward Island has to offer.

"The variety of food and restaurants has been something I've taken advantage of since I arrived. Living in a small town in Newfoundland there aren't many places to go out and eat. Getting to try new foods from different places around the world has been something different for sure" Kearsey said.

After making the transition to major junior, Marcus offered advice for the next crop of rookie prospects quickly approaching their own draft day.

"I would just tell them to work as hard as they can and have fun day in and day out. I think people get too worked up in wanting to be the best and so overwhelmed by the surrounding stresses. Once they get into this league and realize it, I believe the best way to get by is through having fun and treating the opportunity as a privilege and not a chore."

Marcus and the Islanders return to action in Saint John on December 28th before returning home to face the Moncton Wildcats on December 30th and Acadie-Bathurst Titan at 2pm on December 31st. Tickets can be purchased at the Eastlink Centre Box Office in person, by phone at 902.629.6625, or online.
