Young's Pinch-Hit Grand Slam Helps Topple Biloxi on Thursday Night

June 14, 2019 - Southern League (SL1)
Jackson Generals News Release

Jackson, Tenn. - The Jackson Generals, the Double-A affiliate of Major League Baseball's Arizona Diamondbacks, put their rally caps on and battled back from a 3-0 deficit on Thursday, winning 5-4 over the Biloxi Shuckers at The Ballpark at Jackson. The comeback win was the 13th for Jackson (37-30) this year, as they beat Biloxi (40-27) for the fifth consecutive time, dating back to the 2018 Southern League Championship Series.

In his first start back from the injured list, Jackson starter Matt Peacock (2-2, 2.09 ERA) threw five innings of shutout baseball against the Shuckers, allowing just three hits while coaxing 11 groundball outs from the Biloxi offense. In relief, Tyler Mark struggled with control, ceding three runs to the visitors in two-thirds of an inning on five walks and a two-run double by Alexander Alvarez. Bud Jeter entered and finished the frame, throwing another scoreless inning in the seventh before the Jackson offense got into gear.

Facing Biloxi reliever Johan Belisario, the Generals mounted a rally that began with consecutive singles from Pavin Smith and Jamie Westbrook. Jazz Chisholm drew a four-pitch walk to load the bases, but Belisario knuckled down, drawing a pop-out and a strikeout to get to the pitcher's slot in the order. As a pinch hitter, Andy Young was hitless in three prior plate appearances, but that changed on Thursday. Down 0-2 in the count, Young waited out a pair of balls and punished a 2-2 offering from Belisario, drawing the crowd to its feet with a 403-foot grand slam onto the clubhouse roof beyond left field. The slam --- Jackson's first of the year --- vaulted the Generals into the lead at 4-3, but Biloxi didn't give in there.

Against Matt Brill (1-4, 11.77 ERA), the Shuckers manufactured a run with a pair of singles and a fielding error, tying the game at 4-4. The Generals didn't flinch, as Drew Ellis led off the bottom of the eighth inning with a double to left. Ellis reached third base on a wild pitch during a strikeout of Pavin Smith, and Jamie Westbrook drilled a first-pitch single to right field to bring home Ellis with the go-ahead run for a 5-4 lead. Cameron Gann (S, 1) got his first save of the year by striking out two men in the ninth and stranding the potential tying and go-ahead runs on base, helping the Generals even their June record at 7-7.
