York Revolution News Release
The York Revolution made franchise history on Wednesday night, earning their first-ever postseason win, by claiming Game 1 of the Freedom Division Championship Series 10-1 over the Somerset Patriots in front of 3,985 fans at Sovereign Bank Stadium. Game 2 of the best-of-five series is set for Thursday night at 6:30, with Postgame Fireworks on the schedule.
Matt DeSalvo was dominant for the Revs, combining on a two-hitter, the fifth in Revs history.
The offense gave DeSalvo more than he'd need after just one inning, scoring six runs in the first, the most runs ever scored in a first inning in club annals.
Liubiemithz Rodriguez started the scoring with a homerun to left-center with one out in the first inning. Ramon Castro followed with a double down the right field line, and scored on Jose Herrera's RBI single along the left field line. James Shanks then reached on an error, and with two on, Ian Bladergroen roped an RBI double down the right field line to make it 3-0. Erold Andrus worked a 3-0 count leading to an intentional walk, which loaded the bases for John Pachot, who cleared the sacks with a three-run double down the left field line. The Revs sent 10 batters to the plate in the first inning against lefty Joel Kirsten, who entered the night 2-1 with a 3.27 ERA in four playoff starts with Somerset.
DeSalvo made the outburst stand up, retiring the first six that he faced, and after a leadoff single from Jason Belcher in the third, the next 10 that he faced. The right-hander also overcame a 58-minute rain delay, which began after he struck out the first two batters in the fourth. He picked up where he left off, retiring the next five-in-a-row after the delay.
The Revs padded the lead, with a run in the fourth on Herrera's RBI double to left-center, and another score in the sixth when Shanks ripped an RBI single up the middle as part of a two-out rally.
DeSalvo quickly recorded the first two outs of the seventh inning, but Noah Hall connected on a homerun to left field to bust up the shutout. Somerset managed just two baserunners all night until that point, neither of which advanced past first base.
DeSalvo walked the next three batters, but Eric Ackerman came on to strike out Elliott Ayala looking to squelch the threat.
The Revs answered with two runs in the bottom of the seventh. Scott Grimes drilled an RBI triple off the right field wall, and Rodriguez followed with an RBI double to the gap in left-center.
Ackerman fired a scoreless eighth, and Michael Nix worked a 1-2-3 ninth to close out game one.
Rodriguez was 3-for-4 with a homer, double, two RBI, and two runs. Castro reached base all five times, with a double, single, two walks, and a hit-by-pitch, while also scoring twice. Herrera was 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI.
The Revs pounded out 14 hits as a club.
DeSalvo earned the win, striking out eight in 6.2 innings, while allowing just one run on two hits. He walked four, but three of those came to the final three hitters he faced. He has now allowed just three earned runs in 16.2 innings his last four games / two starts.
Kirsten suffered the loss, with six runs allowed (five earned) in three innings.
Notes: York pitching has allowed just one run in each of the last three games; starters have now allowed just two runs in 17.2 innings in those three games. It was just the second home playoff game in team history. Corey Thurman will face Bill Pulsipher in Game 2 of the series on Thursday night at 6:30 p.m. Gates open at 5:30 p.m., with Postgame Fireworks presented by Boost Mobile. Tickets for the Revs' Sprint to the Championship are on-sale at YorkRevolution.com, (717) 801-HITS, and in-person at the Apple Chevrolet Ticket Office.
