Southern Maryland Blue Crabs News Release

The Bluefish hit five home runs and cruised to an 11-1 victory against the Blue Crabs in Game 2 of the Liberty Division Championship Series Thursday night at Regency Furniture Stadium. Bridgeport is now one win away from reaching the Atlantic League Championship Series.

Centerfielder Adam Greenberg led the game off with a double and scored on a throwing error. The error allowed rightfielder Tike Redman to reach second on a sac bunt attempt. Redman was left on base, but the Bluefish had the early 1-0 lead.

Designated hitter Victor Mercedes hit his second homer of the series, a two-run shot into left, the next inning to make it 3-0 Bluefish. Bridgeport then poured it on in the fourth with a pair of two RBI homers by leftfielder Steve Moss and second baseman Hiram Bocachica. With Southern Maryland trailing 7-1 after Bocachica's second home run of the series, RHP Connor Robertson was pulled from the game for lefty Jason Waddell. Robertson (0-1) pitched 2.1 innings and suffered his first loss at Regency Furniture Stadium.

The Blue Crabs scored their only run in the third inning. Second baseman Casey Benjamin hit a one-out triple and came home on rightfielder Greg Porter's RBI sac fly. Through two playoff games, Porter has driven in the Crabs' only runs. Southern Maryland threatened with two outs in the fifth when Benjamin singled, and designated hitter Matt Craig and third baseman Patrick Osborn drew walks against RHP Denny Stark. Stark left the game with the bases loaded, and LHP Matt Smith recorded the final out to shut down a potential rally. Stark (1-0) went on to earn the win.

Ahead 8-1 in the seventh, the Bluefish tacked on three more runs to build a double-digit lead. Moss crushed his second two RBI homer of the night, driving in Redman again.

The Liberty Division Championship Series will continue Friday evening at 7:05 p.m. with Game 3 in Bridgeport at The Ballpark At Harbor Yard. Southern Maryland will try and avoid the sweep with LHP John Halama (2-3, 1.90) on the mound opposite fellow lefty Luis Gonzalez (9-4, 3.56) for Bridgeport.
