York Revolution News Release
Chris Cody gave the York Revolution exactly what they needed with a strong starting effort, as the Revs snapped a three-game skid with a 6-3 win over the Long Island Ducks in front of 4,892 fans at Sovereign Bank Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The Revs (20-22) will welcome the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs to town on Monday night at 6:30 p.m. to open the final series of a nine-game homestand.
Cody (3-5) earned his third win in his last four decisions, going seven innings and allowing just two runs on a pair of solo homers. He walked only one and struck out seven, needing just 90 pitches to complete his seven innings.
The Revs, who had never led in the previous two games of the series, never trailed on Sunday, taking the lead with a pair of runs in the third. Bobby Kielty led off the inning with a double high off the right-center fence, and James Shanks rapped an RBI single up the middle for the game's first run. Salvador Paniagua then doubled down the left field line giving the Revs runners at second and third. Shanks ended up scoring when Ramon Castro hit a hard liner to right field that was dropped by James McOwen, who then made a throw to second to still record an out on a fielder's choice.
Dan Lyons broke up Cody's shutout with a solo homer to left with two outs in the fifth, just his second homer of the season. But twice on Sunday, the Revs answered Long Island's one run by scoring two of their own in the bottom half of the frame.
Shanks led off the home fifth with a double down the first base line, and Ducks starter Gustavo Chacin nearly worked around it, striking out the next two batters. Scott Grimes came through in the clutch, however, blasting a two-run homer to left-center, extending York's lead to 4-1.
Grimes scored his Revs record 250th run on the homer, which was his third in nine games since returning to the lineup, while extending his hitting streak to seven consecutive games. It was also the 39th homer of Grimes' career, just three shy of Jason Aspito's all-time Revolution record, and it was the 20th of his career at Sovereign Bank Stadium, adding to his Revs record.
Josh Johnson connected on a solo homer to left-center in the seventh cutting the York lead to 4-2, but again the Revs answered with two of their own.
After recording the first out of the inning, Chacin issued back-to-back walks to Shanks and Paniagua before allowing an RBI single up the middle to Brandon Haveman, ending his afternoon. Reliever Josh Lansford also walked two in the inning, including Chris Nowak with the bases loaded, as York's lead grew to 6-2.
The Ducks scored an unearned run in the ninth on a ground rule double by Lyons, but R.J. Rodriguez struck out Kraig Binick looking to secure the win, ending the game with the tying run on deck.
Adam Thomas worked a perfect eighth in relief of Cody.
Chacin (0-2) took the loss for Long Island, charged with all six runs in 6.1 innings.
Both teams totaled just seven hits, a night after combining for 20 runs on 31 knocks.
Shanks scored three times for the Revs, going 2-for-3 with a double, a walk, and an RBI. He has now reached base safely seven of nine times the last two games while scoring five runs.
York's Jesus Sanchez (1-2, 4.44) will get the start on Monday against Southern Maryland, which is a Hatfield Dollar Dog Night, as well as a Boomer's Book Club redemption night presented by Heritage Valley Federal Credit Union. Each of the three games in the upcoming series are also part of the Revs' "School's Out Blowout" promotion, with students getting tickets for just $5.
