Lancaster Stormers News Release
Coming into Saturday, the Lancaster Barnstormers had won six straight in the Carmax War of the Roses series.
Now the pendulum has swung back the other way.
Liu Rodriguez drilled a line drive inside the first base bag to score the tying and winning runs in the bottom of the seventh inning in the nightcap as the York Revolution completed a sweep of the Barnstormers with a stunning, come-from-behind, 3-2, win at Sovereign Bank Stadium.
In the opener, the Revs' Chris Cody fired a complete game, coasting to a 7-2 victory.
Lancaster broke a scoreless deadlock in the sixth inning of the second game. Emerson Frostad reached on a two-out single to the hole at short off Adam Thomas, and Francisco Hernandez followed with a ground single up the middle. The Barnstormers went to pinch hitter Brad Boyer who nailed an RBI single into left. James Shanks' throw home was late. Hernandez broke for third and drew a bad throw from Salomon Manriquez as a second run scored.
Without the services of closer Tim Hamulack, whose wife, Meredith, gave birth to their first child on Thursday, the Barnstormers looked to Jeff Bennett to pick up a six-out save. Bennett (4-4) cruised through the 2-3-4 hitters in the sixth to hold the lead but ran into trouble in the seventh.
Jeff Fiorentino walked on five pitches to start the inning and went to second on a single to left by Chris Nowak. Shanks, looking to advance the runners with a bunt, beat out a soft throw to first by Bennett, loading the bases. Manriquez got one across with a single through the hold on the right side, but Bennett fought back. He struck out Scott Grimes for the first out, and got speedy Brandon Haveman to ground into a 4-2 force at the plate with the infield pulled tight. That brought Rodriguez to the plate, and he yanked the 1-0 pitch past Tommy Everidge's diving try for the game winner.
Yunior Novoa (2-5) picked up the win for York with a scoreless seventh.
In the opener, York broke the game open with a five-run second inning. Fiorentino greeted Mark Brackman (6-5) with a leadoff single up the middle, and Nowak walked. James Shanks singled to right to load the bases. Lancaster picked up one out when Travis Scott grounded into a force play at home, but Grimes took Brackman to deep left center with a drive that came back onto the field of play. Third base umpire Ronnie Whiting signaled home run, but the Barnstormers argued and got the call "reduced" to a three-run double as York went up, 4-1. Haveman's bouncer was mishandled by Brad Boyer for an error as Grimes scored, and Joe Thurston added an RBI double to right center for the 6-1 lead.
Cody (5-11) held the Barnstormers to eight hits and two runs. He walked none and struck out six. Lancaster scored one run in the first on a bases loaded wild pitch, and Kody Kirkland produced a second with a double in the sixth inning.
The two clubs wrap up the series Sunday evening at 5:00. Lancaster will send J.D. Durbin (6-7) to the hill against Camden's Derrick Gordon (2-0, 3-4). Fans may tune into 1390-AM, WLAN; 1600-AM, WPDC; 1390wlan.com or the I Heart Radio cell phone app.
