York Loses High Scoring Affair

August 31, 2010 - Atlantic League (AtL)
York Revolution News Release

On a night where York Revolution leadoff man Scott Grimes broke the Atlantic League's single-season record with his 120th run scored, many offensive highlights from the Revolution were overshadowed by the ejection of starter Tim Harikkala three batters into the game in a 16-10 loss to the Long Island Ducks. The Revs will look to snap the losing streak when the homestand continues on Wednesday night at 6 p.m.

Harikkala was ejected by first base umpire Mayhue Edwards after throwing just nine pitches, and as a result, an already overworked bullpen was forced to pitch 8.2 innings in the loss. The Ducks pounded four homeruns, and erased a six-run lead that the Revs had built over the first three innings.

After a close call at first base that ruled Erick Monzon safe beating an attempted double play turn, Robinson Cancel launched a two-run homer to left on the very next pitch, giving the Ducks the early lead. Harikkala was ejected as Cancel rounded the bases.

Cory Willey, who made his season debut in relief the night before, was forced to work 2.2 innings and throw 44 pitches, but he only allowed an unearned run to score.

The Revs jumped in front in their half of the first inning. Grimes worked a leadoff walk, took second on a wild pitch, advanced to third on a groundout, and scored on a two-out double by Jose Herrera down the left field line for the record-breaking run, eclipsing the previous mark set by Lancaster's Michael Woods in 2008. The double extended Herrera's hitting streak to 17 consecutive games.

James Shanks followed with a two-run homer to left, his team-best 17th of the year, tying a career-high which he established last season, giving York a 3-2 lead.

Long Island tied it in the third on an error by right fielder Steve Haake, but Haake more than redeemed himself in the bottom half of the inning.

Liubiemithz Rodriguez and Victor Rodriguez led off the home third with back-to-back doubles producing a quick go-ahead run. Herrera followed with a walk, Shanks singled to right, and Ian Bladergroen drew a bases-loaded walk to push the lead to 5-3. Haake then cracked a grand slam homerun to right-center, giving York a 9-3 lead, and chasing Ducks starter Daryl Harang with still no outs in the third, and six runs already across.

Matt Esquivel drilled a two-run homer to left in the fourth, but the Revs answered with a fourth-inning run of their own when Victor Rodriguez doubled to right-center again, and scored on a wild pitch. That was the only run the Revs managed against the Ducks bullpen, however, as five relievers combined to work the final five innings without allowing a run.

Long Island posted back-to-back four-run innings in the fifth and sixth, part of 11 unanswered runs to close the game.

Cancel singled off the left field wall driving in a run in the fifth, and Willis Otanez followed with a two-run homer to left. Javier Colina went back-to-back with a solo shot to left field, against Thursday's scheduled starter, Celson Polanco, who was forced to pitch in relief, and allowed six runs in 1.1 innings, throwing 30 pitches.

Jason Richardson suffered the loss (3-4), charged with the four runs that scored in the sixth, three of which were earned. All four scored with two outs, and after Monzon had reached on a strikeout that resulted in a wild pitch. Otanez ripped a ground single into left to tie the game at 10-10, and Esquivel smoked a two-run single to center, with a third run scoring on a throwing error.

Long Island scored three more times in the eighth on a two-run double by Matt Cavagnaro and a bases loaded walk to Joey Gathright.

Ducks reliever Chris McCoy (3-0) earned the win, allowing one run in three innings.

Shanks enjoyed a big offensive night for the Revs, going 4-for-5 with a two-run homer; he finished the month of August with a Revs' single-month record 49 hits, batting .392 for the month.

Notes: The Revs' seven-game losing streak matches a club record for the third time... Richardson was forced to throw 26 pitches in relief, Ryan Basner hurled 28 pitches, and closer R.J. Rodriguez had to eat up the final four outs, throwing 40 pitches. Cancel (2-for-5) extended his hitting streak to 17 consecutive games, matching Herrera for the longest active streak in the league. Cancel's on-base streak grew to 35 consecutive games, the longest in the league this season. Haake's grand slam was the Revs' fifth of the season; Haake established a new career-high with 11 homeruns, eight of which have come with men on base. lefty Jeremy Lewis makes his second start for York on Wednesday night, opposite Ducks southpaw Randy Leek. first pitch is set for 6 p.m., with gates opening at 4:30 p.m. for Battle of the Bands. it is also York County Government Employees Night. tickets are available at YorkRevolution.com, (717) 801-HITS, and in-person at the Apple Chevrolet Ticket Office. playoff tickets are also on-sale now for the Revs' Sprint to the Championship!
