Hartford Yard Goats News Release
Ezequiel Tovar's eighth inning home run off of former UConn reliever John Russell highlighted a late-inning comeback and catapulted the Hartford Yard Goats to a 10-inning, 4-3 win over the Richmond Flying Squirrels, Tuesday night in a driving rain at The Diamond. Another former UConn reliever, PJ Poulin notched the victory, as Hartford moved to a season-high 10-games over .500 (25-15) by winning the first of a six-game series. The Yard Goats, 4-0 in extra inning games this season, have won six of seven on the road trip and trail first place Somerset by 1 1/2 games.
Down 3-1 in the eighth, Hartford started the comeback on Tovar's ninth home run of the season, an opposite field line shot to right. The Yard Goats then tied the score against Russell on a single by Brenton Doyle, a stolen base and a run-scoring single by Aaron Shunk. After Poulin entered in the ninth to strike out Shane Matheny with two men on, Hartford scored an unearned run in the tenth. Ghost runner Jimmy Herron moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Hunter Stovall and scored on a throwing error by the shortstop on a ball hit by Isaac Collins. After walking the lead off batter in the last of the 10th, putting runners at first and second, Poulin registered a strike out and got Mike Gigliotti to ground into a 4-6-3 double play to record his second win of the season.
Karl Kauffmann started for Hartford and pitched 6 2/3 innings, allowing three runs on five hits. He walked two and struck out eight. Tovar and Doyle each had two hits to pace the Hartford offense.
The Yard Goats continue their six-game series with the Giants affiliate, the Richmond Flying Squirrels, on Wednesday night at 6:35. RHP Noah Gotsis will start for the Yard Goats and RHP Blake Rivera will start for the Flying Squirrels. The game will be broadcast on Newsradio 1410 WPOP. The Yard Goats return to Dunkin' Donuts Park on Tuesday, May 31st at 7:05 to host the Phillies affiliate, the Reading Fightin Phils.
