Staten Island Yankees News Release
STATEN ISLAND - Clarke Schmidt and Harold Cortijo combined to strike out nine batters and allow only one earned run, but the Staten Island Yankees were held without a run for only the third time this year, as they were defeated by the Aberdeen IronBirds 3-0 at Richmond County Ballpark, on Monday night.
Schmidt, selected by the New York Yankees in the first round of the 2017 MLB Draft, struck out four batters, allowing only one run, one hit and two walks in four innings pitched. The four frames set a career-high for the right hander, who is recovering from Tommy John Surgery.
Cortijo relieved Schmidt to begin the fifth, and went on to strike out five batters in five frames, allowing two runs, both of which were unearned.
Despite the stellar pitching performance by the Yankees, the one run scored by the Ironbirds in the fourth inning, and the two in the top of the eighth, were enough for the visitors to squeak out a 3-0 win.
Eric Wagaman (2-for-4) and Junior Soto (2-for-3) each posted multi-hit games for the Baby Bombers.
The Yankees and IronBirds will play game two of this three game series tomorrow at 7:00 p.m. On the mound for Staten Island will be Matt Sauer, with Hector Guance getting the start for Aberdeen.
