Dunn Collects Three Hits, Spikes' Win Streak Ends with 4-1 Loss to Muckdogs

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Nick Dunn produced his second three-hit game as a professional, but the State College Spikes' five-game winning streak came to a close with a 4-1 loss to the Batavia Muckdogs on Tuesday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.

Matt Brooks stroked an RBI single to right field to break a 1-1 tie in the eighth inning, and Denis Karas's single combined with an error to plate two more Batavia (18-25) runs in the ninth.

State College (19-24) took the lead in the third when Stanley Espinal's sacrifice fly to right field scored Dunn to make it 1-0.

The Muckdogs tied the game in the fourth when J.D. Osborne doubled and scored on a double by Sean Reynolds.

Jacob Schlesener delivered another strong start for the Spikes, going 5 1/3 innings and allowing one run on six hits and two walks while striking out five batters.

Justin Toerner also notched multiple hits for State College.

Eli Kraus (0-1) took his first loss as a professional after being charged with the Muckdogs' go-ahead run in the eighth. Kraus faced two batters in the eighth, walking one and allowing a hit.

Batavia reliever Alex Vesia (1-0) picked up the win after tossing three scoreless innings. Vesia gave up three hits and a walk while striking out four batters in the victory.

Zach Wolf (1) allowed one hit and one walk over two shutout frames to earn the save. Wolf struck out two batters in the effort.

Osborne and Karas each collected three hits for the Muckdogs, while Reynolds added three walks to his RBI double.

Wednesday, the Spikes and Muckdogs meet in the rubber match of their three-game series with a special noon start at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. Right-hander Jim Voyles (3-3) is set to head to the mound for State College, while Batavia will send right-hander Humberto Mejia (1-4) to the hill.

It's Super Splash Day II at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park, as Ike's Kids Zone turns into the Splash Zone for kids of all ages, featuring a dunk tank, a fire hose from Alpha Fire Company, kiddie pools and more.

Plus, fans can enjoy Half-Craft Wednesday, presented by 93.7 THE BUS, with half-price craft beers, wine and spirits from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. In addition, fans can quench their thirst with half-price regular sodas all game long.

In addition, it's a Winner Wednesday, presented by the PA Lottery, with chances to win big all night long. Kids will also be able to take advantage of a Special Edition Kids Run the Bases opportunity after the game.

The homestand continues with a four-game, three-day series against the Auburn Doubledays (Washington Nationals). Highlights of the back half of the homestand include doubleheader action against the Auburn Doubledays with $1 Beer Thursday presented by BIG Froggy 101 on August 2, Bark in the Park III, presented by NEWSRADIO 1390 WRSC, on Friday, August 3, and Animal House Night with a State "College" Sweater Jersey-off-the-Back Auction presented by PSECU to benefit Children's Miracle Network and FIREWORKS on Saturday, August 4.

Tickets for each game from Wednesday through Saturday, as well as the 2018 New York-Penn League All-Star Game presented by the Central PA Convention & Visitors Bureau, the 2018 NYPL All-Star Tailgate Gala presented by Reinhart Foodservice, and every game on the 2018 Spikes home schedule, are currently on sale through the Spikes Ticket Office.
