Norwich Sea Unicorns News Release
NORWICH, Ct. - Wenceel Perez and Cam Warner tallied back-to-back RBIs in the bottom of the third inning but the Connecticut Tigers (21-21) settled for four base hits in a 6-4 loss to the Vermont Lake Monsters (21-23) on Tuesday night at Dodd Stadium.
The Lake Monsters led from start to finish after an RBI groundout in the first inning and a three-run second inning against Tigers starter Chance Kirby (Loss, 2-2). The 23-year-old righty bounced back to retire 10 of the final 11 batters he faced. Kirby exited after six innings with one earned run on six hits and four strikeouts.
Trailing 4-0 in the third, Connecticut rallied against Vermont starter Adam Reuss (Win, 3-1) with a leadoff double by Isrrael De La Cruz, an infield RBI single from Perez, and a sacrifice fly RBI by Warner to trim the Vermont lead to 4-2. Eric De La Rosa and Clark Brinkman recorded the only other base hits for Connecticut. Brinkman replaced left fielder Reece Hampton after he suffered an injury while running the bases in the fifth inning.
Vermont scored twice more against Connecticut reliever Victor Mueses in the seventh inning for a 6-2 advantage. Lake Monsters left fielder Payton Squier scored three runs on Tuesday to push his series total to four runs with six hits in eight at-bats.
Connecticut hit back with two runs in the eighth on a throwing error by Vermont third baseman Jonah Bride that scored both De La Cruz and Brinkman to make it 6-4 but Lake Monsters reliever Slater Lee (Save, 3) allowed only one walk while recording the final four outs.
Next up, the Tigers and Lake Monsters meet for the final time in 2018 during the rubber match of a three-game series with Connecticut right-handed starter Carlos Guzman (1-2, 4.78) scheduled against Vermont righty Brady Feigl (1-1, 1.56) on Three Plus Me Wednesday.
