Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees News Release
Buffalo, NY - Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (76-56) used a three run sixth inning for a 4-2 come from behind victory over the Buffalo Bisons (62-69) Wednesday afternoon at Coca-Cola Field. With the Yankees 30th come from behind win on the season, SWB reduced its "magic number" to clinch the International League North division to eight with 13 games left in the regular season.
The Bisons grabbed the early lead for the second straight game over the Yankees picking up two runs in the top half of the second inning. Following a leadoff walk to Zach Lutz, Josh Satin popped a shallow fly out to right field that hit off the glove of Kosuke Fukudome and dropped to the turf. Centerfielder Chris Dickerson picked up the loose ball and threw wildly to second base allowing Lutz to reach safely. Matt Tuiasosopo singled to left to give Buffalo a 1-0 lead. Satin advanced to third on the hit and would score on a sacrifice fly to give the Bisons a 2-0 advantage.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre was held without a hit until the fourth inning by Buffalo starter Zach Wheeler (LP, 0-2) who retired nine of the first 10 batters he faced. Wheeler's second walk of the afternoon led off the fourth with Corban Joseph reaching on the free pass. Joseph moved to third on a base hit by Eduardo Nunez, who had his second consecutive three hit game, and scored the Yankees first run on Brandon Laird's sacrifice fly to cut the lead to 2-1.
Yankees starter Justin Thomas kept the Bison off the board the rest of the way pitching into the sixth inning before getting lifted for reliever Preston Claiborne (WP, 3-0). Thomas threw a season high 5.1 innings on a season high 86 pitches, allowing four hits with two walks and four strikeouts. The lefthander allowed two runs, one earned in a no decision.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre took the lead in the sixth inning scoring three off Wheeler to take a 4-2 lead. Dickerson doubled and scored on Joseph's RBI single to right field tying the game at 2-2. Joseph went to second on the throw home and reached safely shortstop Oswaldo Navarro was charged with an error for muffing the throw. An infield single by Nunez put runners at second and third for Laird who gave the Yankees the lead with an RBI ground out to third. Fukudome added an insurance run with a single to right that scored Nunez from second base.
Claiborne, who walked the first batter that he faced after taking over from Thomas retired the next five hitters he faced with a pair of strikeouts to pick up his third win of the season.
Cory Wade (SV, 4) allowed a two out single in the eighth and after walking the leadoff man in the ninth allowed a one out single to pinch hitter Adam Loewen to bring the go ahead run to the plate with one out. After a fly out for the second out of the inning, Wade struck out Lucas May to end the game.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre continues five straight games in Buffalo with the opening game of a three game road series on Wednesday night with a 7:05 PM first pitch from Coca-Cola Field. Right hander Adam Warren (7-8, 3.77 ERA) makes the start for the Yankees with right hander Jenrry Mejia (3-2, 2.75 ERA) getting the start for the Bisons.
