Yankee Offense Explodes for Seven Run 4th Inning in 11-5 Win

Rochester, NY - Heading into Thursday night's game the Gwinnett Braves (37-45) had lost 12 straight games. It didn't get any better for the Braves as the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees (44-37) won game three of a four game set at Frontier Field by a score of 11-5, highlighted by a seven-run fourth inning.

Russell Branyan got things started in the bottom half of the first inning with a two-RBI single to right-center giving the Yankees the 2-0 adavantage. The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre offense exploded for seven runs in the home half of the fourth. Brandon Laird started the rally with an RBI double to left field. Ramiro Pena then came up with runners on the corners with one out and grounded to second. The Braves were able to get Cole Garner at second, but a hustling Pena beat the throw at first allowing Laird to score from third and keep the inning alive.

Later in the inning, Corban Joseph roped an RBI double to right field, plating Pena and Chris Dickerson. The Yankees weren't done there as Ronnier Mustelier picked up where he left off on Wednesday night with yet another RBI single to right field. Jack Cust then capped the Yankee rally with a two-run shot over the right-centerfield wall giving the Yankees the 9-0 advantage after four innings of play.

The Braves picked up their first run of the game on a J.C. Boscan RBI double cutting the Yankee lead to 9-1 in the top half of the seventh. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre added two more runs on two consecutive sacrifice flies off the bats of Branyan and Francisco Cervelli, swelling the Yankee lead to 11-1 after eight innings.

Gwinnett tried to make things interesting in the top half of the ninth as they loaded the bases with one out in the inning. Luis Durango then lined out for the second out of the inning. Jose Costanza and Tyler Pastornicky then roped back to back singles combining for three runs and bringing the Yankee lead to 11-5. However, Felix Pie then lined out to right field, ending the game.

Veteran right-hander John Maine picked up the win for the Yankees improving to 2-2 on the season. He tossed five innings of shutout baseball allowing just four hits, while striking out six and walking one. Chase Whitley and Preston Claiborne tossed the final four innings, preserving the Yankee lead. Julio Teheran was credited with the loss for Gwinnett. He allowed 10 hits and all nine runs and struck out four, while falling to 5-5 on the season.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and Gwinnett take the diamond Friday evening at 7:05 for game three of a four game series at Frontier Filed in Rochester, NY. Nelson Figueroa (4-2, 3.93) makes his return to the starting rotation for the Yankees, while Gwinnett counters with Jose Lugo (1-2, 3.72).
