Rochester Red Wings News Release
THURSDAY, JUNE 28, 2012 w COCA-COLA PARK
GAME #80 - ROAD GAME #42 - 7:05 P.M.
ROCHESTER RED WINGS (37-42) at LEHIGH VALLEY IRONPIGS (44-34)
RHP STEVEN HIRSCHFELD (1-1, 3.45) vs. RHP TYLER CLOYD (7-1, 2.17)
LEHIGH FIVES ALL AROUND: The Rochester Red Wings tonight play the 3rd game of their 4-game series at Lehigh Valley (Phillies). Following tomorrow's series and roadtrip finale, the Red Wings will return to Frontier Field for a 2-game series against the Empire State Yankees Saturday-Sunday. Then it's back on the road for a 2-game set at Pawtucket (Red Sox) Monday-Tuesday. Rochester next Wednesday begins a 6-game homestand that leads into the All-Star Break, featuring a pair of 3-game series vs. Pawtucket and Lehigh Valley.
a The Red Wings and IronPigs will play a doubleheader on July 8, the last day of action before the All-Star Break. Gametime is 12:05 p.m.
ROSTER NEWS: The Minnesota Twins tomorrow will recall right-handed pitcher Kyle Waldrop from Triple-A Rochester. To make room for him on the roster the Twins have optioned righthander Jeff Manship to Rochester. Waldrop is the 11th player, the 6th pitcher, to get promoted to the Twins from the Red Wings.
a Waldrop began the season on the 15-Day Disabled List with a strained right elbow. The 26-year-old was reinstated from the DL and optioned to Rochester June 1. Waldrop posted no record, 2 saves, and a 1.26 ERA in 9 games with the Red Wings. He made his major league debut with the Twins in 2011, going 1-0 with a 5.73 ERA in 7 appearances.
a Manship registered a 10.97 ERA in 8 games with the Twins after his May 27 recall. He allowed 9 runs in 2.1 innings in his last 3 outings. The 27-year-old is 4-1 with a 3.08 ERA in 12 games (4 starts) with the Red Wings.
STEADY IMPROVEMENT: The Red Wings have won 4 of their last 6 games and are 28-26 beginning May 3, playing better than .500 baseball for more than a 3rd of the season. That record includes a 23-19 mark beginning May 15. Also, since sitting a season-worst 10 games below .500 at 20-30 following a 4-1 loss at Charlotte (White Sox) May 28, the Red Wings are 17-12 in their last 29 games.
a A win tonight would make the Red Wings 4 games under .500, the closest they would be to the break-even point since May 9, when they were 14-18 after 5-2 loss at Pawtucket.
a The Red Wings are 15-11 in June with 3 games remaining, assuring themselves of their first winning record in a calendar month since going 17-15 in August 2009.
a At 15-11, the Red Wings have their best record of any calendar month this season, yet have their highest ERA of any month at 4.20 (106 ER/227.0 IP). Rochester has scored 99 runs in 26 games in June, however, for their highest monthly average of 3.8 runs per game. The Wings averaged 3.1 runs per game in April (71 runs in 23 games) and 3.4 runs in May (103 runs in 30 games).
TURN THE TABLES: The Red Wings have won 4 of their last 6 road games, but are still an International League-worst 12-22 in true road contests, a total that doesn't include a 4-4 mark as the "road" team against Empire State at Frontier Field. Rochester has won just 2 of its 9 true road series, sweeping Syracuse (Nationals) in a 2-game set to open the season and taking 3 of 4 from Louisville (Reds) June 14-17.
a The Red Wings last night won their 2nd straight one-run game on the road. They also won 11-10 in 10 innings at Charlotte May 30, coming back from a 4-run deficit in the 9th to win it. The Wings had lost their first 3 one-run games away from Frontier Field.
BABY STEPS: At 37-42, the Red Wings are 6 games better than they were at this point last year (31-48) and 8 games better than they were in 2010 (29-50). Rochester is off to its best 79-game start since going 38-41 in 2009.
a With Monday's win vs. Charlotte, the Red Wings guaranteed themselves their most wins entering the All-Star break since 2009, when they were 44-44 going into the Mid-Summer Classic. Rochester was 33-59 at the break in 2010 and 35-55 in 2011.
A COCA-COLA CLASSIC: The Red Wings last night snapped a 7-game losing streak at Coca-Cola Park, logging their first win here since a 6-2 triumph May 29, 2011. The victory also broke a 16-game losing streak at Coke-inspired ballparks. The Wings currently have a 9-game skid at Buffalo's (Mets) Coca-Cola Field.
a Rochester's 9-game losing streak at Buffalo is its longest current skid against an opponent on the road. The Wings last won in Buffalo in the 2nd game of an April 19, 2011 doubleheader, a 2-0 triumph in 7 innings. The Red Wings return to Coca-Cola Field August 25-28.
FIRST THING'S FIRST: The Red Wings have scored a first-inning run in 3 straight games and in 5 of their last 6 contests. Rochester last plated a first-inning run in 4 straight games April 22-26, a season high. The Wings went 1-3 in that span.
a The Wings have scored a first-inning run in 21 of their 79 games (27 percent) and are 13-8 in those contests, including a win last night.
a The Wings have been outscored 38-35 in the first inning.
a At the back end of games, meanwhile, the Red Wings have outscored their opponents 22-10 in the 9th inning. That total includes a run in the 9th last night at Lehigh Valley to give the Red Wings a 4-3 win. It was the club's 7th win in its last at-bat.
POWER OUTAGE: The Red Wings have gone 4 straight games without a home run. Their last homer came off the bat off Danny Valencia, an 8th-inning solo blast off Charlotte's (White Sox) Dan Remenowsky Saturday at Frontier Field. Rochester's season-worst homer drought is 8 games from April 29-May 7. That was the club's longest since another 8-gamer May 24-June 1, 2010.
a The Red Wings homered 20 times in their first 22 games of June before the current 4-game drought.
a The Wings have hit 45 home runs overall, the 2nd-lowest total in the IL ahead of only Indianapolis' (Pirates) 41.
