Florence Y'alls News Release

FLORENCE, KY - The Florence Y'alls (33-45), presented by Towne Properties, closed out their weekend series with a tight 5-3 victory over the Lake Erie Crushers (31-47) at Thomas More Stadium on Sunday.

Pitching dominated the day between Florence and Lake Erie. After a scoreless first, the Y'alls dented the scoreboard first against Lake Erie starter Shane Gustafson (2.0 IP, 3 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 1 K) in the second inning. A one-out double from third baseman Brian Fuentes and a walk to shortstop Ed Johnson put two men aboard for second baseman Jeremiah Burks, who doubled both runners home to give the Y'alls a 2-0 lead. Two batters later, left fielder Lane Hoover singled to left through a drawn-in infield to score Burks from second base. After two innings, Florence led 3-0.

In the third inning, Lake Erie scored its first run of the day. A leadoff double for center fielder Sean Cheely and a lineout placed a runner at third for third baseman Zach Racusin, who hit a sacrifice fly that scored Cheely and put the Crushers on the board. After three innings, Florence led 3-1.

Neither team scored again until the eighth inning, thanks in part to a strong start from Florence righthander Jake McMahill (6.0 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 5 K). The Crushers mounted a rally in the eighth off of Y'alls' lefthander Kent Klyman, who hit the first batter he faced and promptly allowed three consecutive singles before leaving the game. With the bases loaded and no one out in a 3-2 game, righthander Brian McKenna entered the game to escape the jam. After a strikeout of Lake Erie first baseman Josh Rego, designated hitter Hector Roa chopped an infield single to third base to score left fielder Jiandido Tromp from third base. Zach Racusin attempted to score from second on the play, but he was thrown out at home on a 5-4-2 putout. McKenna induced a flyout to end the inning and keep the score tied.

The Y'alls then retook the lead for good in the eighth against Lake Erie righthander Trevor Kuncl. A single and two walks loaded the bases with nobody out for the Y'alls, who brought designated hitter Brennan Price to the plate after an unproductive first out. Price's bases-loaded walk scored Jeremiah Burks from third for the lead before right fielder Hank Zeisler's sacrifice fly put the Y'alls ahead 5-3. McKenna closed out the ninth to secure a series-closing win.

The Y'alls end their week with two wins in six games and remain in seventh place in the West Division. Florence resumes its homestand on Tuesday against the Evansville Otters. First pitch between Florence and Evansville is scheduled for Tuesday, August 15th at 6:32 p.m. ET.
