Sioux City Explorers News Release
The Sioux City Explorers announced today that they have traded the rights to Pete Rose Jr. to the Joliet Jackhammers in exchange for five players and an undisclosed sum of cash. Players that will be joining the X's on Monday include, INF Frederico Balet, INF Chad Henry, RHP Wilson Sido, RHP Adam Shafer, and RHP Jon Rohfling.
"Rose is a guy who would have made our lineup better, but we really needed help in the field," comments field manager Jay Kirkpatrick. "Harry Stavrenos did a great job addressing our needs with this trade and making sure we got good value out of Pete Rose Jr. Now our job is to show Rose that if he would have come here he would have been on a great team that will compete for a championship."
Frrederico Balet is expected to be the X's starting third basemen on opening day. Last season, Balet won the Frontier League batting title with a .405 batting average in 78 games with Cook County. The 2003 season will be the third for Balet in professional baseball.
Chad Henry will be entering his second professional season this year with the X's. He is expected to take over the starting job at second base and also backup Lance Woodcock at shortstop. The second year player out of Mississippi State hit .261 last year in 59 games for Joliet.
Wilson Sido will join Roger Luque, Ralph McCasland, Adam Springston, and Chris Swiatkiewicz as the five starters for the Explorers pitching staff. Sido has a 3.76 career earned run average to go with a 31-20 career record. The right-hander posted a 10-2 record with the Indians A and AA affiliates in 2001. Sido appeared in five games for the Lincoln Saltdogs last season and posted a 2-1 record.
Adam Shafer is a third year professional player with two seasons in the Frontier League under his belt. The young rightie has a career 2.45 earned run average in 92 total innings of work and has a chance to be a spot starter for the X's as well as a relief pitcher.
Jon Rohfling is an outstanding rookie pitcher who pitched for the Jackhammers last season. In 26.2 innings, Rohfling posted a 2.03 earned run average and struck out 37 batters in helping Joliet make the playoffs in their inaugural season.
All five players are expected to join the X's prior to their exhibition game on Monday in Winner, SD. The X's will also be in action on Tuesday in Crofton, NE for their final game of the pre-season.

NOTES: The X's pre-season struggles continued Saturday night in Sloan, IA when they dropped a 12-4 decision to the Kansas City T-Bones. Ryan Luther paced the offence with a double and a homerun while local product Casey Baker picked up two hits and helped his chances of making the team greatly.
