
X's lock in Schermerhorn for 2011 Season

SIOUX CITY, IA - The Sioux City Explorers announced today that they have signed workhorse Derek Schermerhorn to a 2011 American Association contract.
The 26-year-old, Henderson, NV native has spent the last three years in the American Association, part of the 2008 season with the Wichita Wingnuts and the remaining here in Sioux City with the Explorers. Schermerhorn was drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the 2007 Amateur Draft, after a stand-out collegiate career with Wichita State.
The 2010 season was one of the best offensively for Schermerhorn. In 336 at bats, he collected 104 hits, 18 doubles, 5 triples, while batting .310 and scoring 54 runs. Schermerhorn continued to be a threat on the base paths with collecting 27 stolen bases last season. He has accumulated 79 stolen bases in 260 games with the X's. Schermerhorn was recognized as an American Association Batter of the Week during the 2011 season. In that one week, he hit at a clip of .600 in 20 at-bats over six games.

Schermerhorn has been a permanent fixture in the Explorers line-up during his two full seasons (2009 & 2010) with the X's. He has played in 191 of the 192 games, missing only one game during the 2010 season. Schermerhorn is a true utility player, having played seven of the nine defensive positions for the X's.
