Pittsburgh Xplosion News Release

PITTSBURGH - The Pittsburgh Xplosion defeated the Toledo Ice 114-112 at Mellon Arena to even their record to 4-4. The Xplosion were led by former Schenley High School guard Jay Benson, who scored 24 points and hit several driving layups in the final minutes to ice the victory for the Xplosion.

Guard Kyle Crawford added 22 points and 6 assists; Armon Gilliam chipped in 17 points and 8 rebounds, and newly signed forward Janerio Spurlock of Kansas State scored 17 and grabbed 6 rebounds.

The Xplosion trailed 86-80 at the end of the third quarter but outscored Toledo 34-26 in the final quarter. Benson, a former standout at Mansfield (PA) University, slashed into the lane agressively and stroked 4 three-point shots as well to crack the Ice when the game was on the line.

The fourth-quarter meltdown at Mellon Arena caused Toledo's record to fall to 3-3. The Ice were led by Jamel Stanten, who scored 28 points and dished out 5 assists. Lionel Armstead poured in 24, Dubrey Black scored 22 and Arron Bates added 19 points and 9 rebounds.

The Xplosion's next home game is Wednesday, Dec. 7 against the Detroit Wheels at the Petersen Events Center. Tip off is 7 p.m.
