December 2, 2005 - American Basketball Association (ABA) News Release
Answer: All. It certainly didn't take long for the news to get around. Texas issued a statement yesterday that explained the reasons - "We are concerned about a number of things we have discussed directly with the league office..." First, I want to say that we have nothing but the utmost respect for Charles Key and Mike Senters, the owners of the Texas Tycoons, and the entire Tycoon organization. They are quality people. Their decision came after much discussion. The ABA anticipated opening the season with teams in Fort Worth (Tycoons), San Antonio, Baton Rouge, New Orleans, Kansas City and St. Louis. These teams would make up the division in which the Tycoons would play. Louisiana had hurricane problems; the Louisiana teams couldn't play. Kansas City and St. Louis have not been able to get their operations started. San Antonio did not meet ABA league qualifications. This left Texas far from their potential opponents and made it necessary to travel long distances east or west - and made it necessary for visiting teams to travel long distances to Texas. Critical to the ABA format is lower transportation costs (ground transportation) so that ticket prices could remain affordable. Texas, the other teams, and the ABA felt is was better not to have a team so far away from other teams - and thus, Texas chose to withdraw. Obviously, like Texas, we regret this but do believe it is in the best interests of Texas and the ABA. On a side note, the ABA has taken market reservations (to be announced) for both Austin TX and San Antonio TX next season and will have a team in Dallas/Ft. Worth and Houston next season as well. We will not have a similar problem next season. And again, we wish the Texas Tycoons organization well. If you have a question, email joenewman@abalive.com.
Note: OurSports Central no longer actively covers the American Basketball Association (ABA) as a professional league due in part to its inability to publish and play a schedule and the transitory nature of many of its teams.
