Memphis Xplorers News Release

Minor medical mishaps will be no cause for crisis during the Memphis Xplorers' Saturday, May 14 game against the Amarillo Dusters at 7 p.m. when the Mississippi Nurses Association District 28 is the featured non-profit group.

The Nurses Association will have a booth during the game and will offer free body mass index and weight readings, along with health tips. Hernando Middle School 7th-grader Christine Cueto, who won the "Celebrate Nursing" art contest sponsored by the organization this month in DeSoto County Schools, will also be in attendance.

The Association will also conduct a raffle featuring items donated by local business, including a $300 3-month family membership at DeSoto Athletic Club, Mary Kay products, discount and special offer coupons and University of Mississippi merchandise.

The Nurses Association recently participated in a fundraiser using Xplorers game tickets to add to their ongoing goal of providing a scholarship to help a local nurse with books, computers and other research needs.

"We are just so excited," District 28 President Robyn Caldwell said. "Christine is considering nursing as a profession. This scholarship is intended to help aspiring nurses like her to succeed in their goals. We've just seen it come alive."

District 28, which includes Tate, Marshall and DeSoto Counties, was part of the 11-county District 22 until December of 2004. The mission of the Nurses' Association is to serve as the voice of registered nurses in Mississippi—the organization employs a full-time lobbyist—and to provide leadership to improve the health of the people through such events as health fairs and continuing education courses for nurses.

The Mississippi Nurses Association works with the Office of Nursing Workforce to ease the shortage of nurses.

"Currently there are 125,000 nursing positions needed throughout the nation," Caldwell said. "In 2020, projections calculate a shortage of 800,000 nurses.

"The need for nursing is there. Nursing is more than just changing dressings and bringing people their medicines. Nurses do everything from conduct exams and write prescriptions to wellness education and hospice care. Nurses play an ever-increasing role in the medical industry."

Caldwell, who has been a member of the Mississippi Nurses Association for two and a half years, said anyone is welcome to come to meetings.

"I want other people to share the vision," she said. "We want people to come and see what we're about."
