Wynder Captains in Youth National Team Debut as U.S. Wins Friendlies
June 10, 2022 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Louisville City FC News Release
Louisville City FC defender Josh Wynder featured this week in a pair of wins for the U.S. Youth National Team's U-19s, making his debut for the red, white and blue during friendlies in Marbella, Spain.
The 17-year-old captained the U.S. in Monday's 2-1 victory over England and made a substitute appearance in Thursday's 3-0 win over Norway. His first youth national team game experience came six weeks after Wynder participated in training the marked U-19s first camp since the COVID-19 pandemic began.
"It was a wonderful but humbling feeling to wear the captain's armband on my debut and represent my country and club," Wynder said. "I feel like I gained leadership qualities that will be good for me in my career."
The Louisville native was one of 13 April camp participants invited back for the USYNT friendlies. The roster included only two other USL Championship players: Loudoun United forward Kristian Fletcher and Orange County forward Oluwakorede Osudina.
Wynder's national team experience adds to a strong start to his 2022 campaign in purple. Wynder has started 10 USL Championship matches for LouCity, compiling a team-leading 6 blocked shots to go with an 84.4% passing accuracy, 19 clearances and 16 interceptions.
The defender returns to Louisville this weekend and will be available for selection in City's next contest, a June 18 meeting with 2021 USL Championship title winners Orange County SC at Lynn Family Stadium.
