THE LEAD OFF: The Power dropped the series opener on Monday night at Appalachian Power Park to the Augusta GreenJackets 2-1. West Virginia got on the board early when Edwin Espinal singled home JaCoby Jones in the first inning. Luis Heredia was dominant, not allowing a run over seven innings with five strikeouts. The Jackets, however, would tie the game in the eighth when Tyler Ross singled home a run and then took the lead in the ninth behind a Cristian Paulino solo blast. Brett McKinney was charged with the loss in relief while Carlos Diaz earned the win and Jacob Smith tallied the save.

WELCOME BACK: The West Virginia Power and August GreenJackets will meet this week at Appalachian Power Park for the first time since 2008. The Power opened the home schedule in 2008 from April 7-10 by splitting a home series with the GreenJackets. West Virginia holds a 7-6 advantage over August at Appalachian Power Park, but the GreenJackets lead the all-time series at 28-20.

BEST BUDDY: Power right-hander Buddy Borden was named South Atlantic League Pitcher of the Week on Monday afternoon. It is the second time Borden has claimed the award, with the first on July 14. Borden posted a 2-0 record over two starts, allowing one run en route to a 0.69 ERA with 14 strikeouts and two walks.

TWICE AS NICE: Power outfielder and Pirates 2013 first-round draft pick Austin Meadows was tabbed as the South Atlantic League's Player of the Week on Monday afternoon. Meadows joins Borden for the weekly honor after posting a .480 average over the week with four doubles, two home runs and seven runs batted in.

THIS JUST IN: Before Sunday's game, the Pittsburgh Pirates activated right-hander Justin Topa from the Power Disabled List. Topa has a record of 3-8 with a 5.97 ERA and left during a start on July 21 before being placed on the Disabled List. To make room for the pitcher, the Pirates placed catcher/left fielder Francisco Diaz on the Power Disabled List. Diaz was .227 with 13 RBIs when the move was made.

DEFENSE IS THE NAME OF THE GAME: Power catcher Reese McGuire was recently tabbed as "Best Defensive Catcher in the South Atlantic League" by Baseball America in their latest edition of "Best Tools". McGuire has tossed out a league-best 42 would-be base stealers and leads the league with eight double plays among catchers. The backstop is throwing out base stealers at a 41 percent rate, third-best in the league.

NUMBER ONE WITH A BULLET: JaCoby Jones home run on Saturday was his 18th of the season, placing the shortstop in a tie for third most in a single West Virginia Power season. Two other players have hit eighteen in a season: Wily Garcia (2012) and Aaron Baker (2010) . Steffan Wilson (2008) is second with 19 home runs and Stephen Chapman (2007) holds the record with 24 long balls.

POWER PROMO UPDATE- AUGUST 23: The Power battle the Kannapolis Intimidators on Saturday, August 23 at Appalachian Power Park on for Back to School Night. Backpacks will be given away to the first 1,000 fans 12 and under for the 7:05 first pitch.

POWER POINTS: Before Thursday's game, the Pittsburgh Pirates activated outfielder Jeff Roy from the Power Disabled List. Roy was batting .216 in 23 games with one home run and 10 RBIs before being placed on the Disabled List on August 1 with a knee injury. The Pirates also released right-handed pitcher Robby Rowland. Rowland was in his second stint with the Power and was 1-0 with a 7.71 ERA in six appearances.

AROUND THE ORGANIZATION: The Pittsburgh Pirates dominated the Detroit Tigers 11-6. The Pirates scored eight in the first two innings and homered four times including a pair from Travis Snider... Indianapolis was idle on Monday. The Indians visit Toledo tonight with Nick Kingham on the hill... Altoona was off on Monday. The Curve play host to Trenton tonight... Bradenton edged St. Lucie 5-4. Jacob Stallings drove in three with a pair of doubles for the Marauders... Jamestown handled Aberdeen 10-5.
