THE LEAD OFF: West Virginia lost 9-3 to Hagerstown on Friday night. The Suns built a 5-0 lead before the Power could plate their first run. In the bottom of the fifth, Max Moroff hit a solo home run and Walker Gourley hit a sac fly to cut the lead to three. In the sixth, Stetson Allie singled in Josh Bell to cut the deficit to two runs. Hagerstown added four runs of insurance over the final two innings to seal the win. Clay Holmes took the loss after allowing the first five tallies. Pedro Encarnacion picked up the win and Robert Benincasa earned the save.
THE CHASE CONTINUES: The Power enter play today in third place; a game and a half behind Hagerstown in the Northern Division. Hickory fell twice last night, allowing the Suns to leap over them atop the standings. West Virginia has ten games left during the first half of the 2013 season. The Power play the Suns twice before hitting the road to play four in Delmarva and four in Greensboro. Hagerstown will return home to play Hickory four times before Lakewood comes in. The Crawdads finish the first half at home against the Shorebirds.
POWER V. SUNS: West Virginia and Hagerstown continue their three-game series tonight. The Power trail in the all-time set 60-55, but do have a winning record at home against the Suns since 2005 with 29 wins in 54 games. West Virginia and Hagerstown will also meet six times in the second half, none of which will occur after July 3.
ALL-STAR POWER: West Virginia had six players selected to represent the club in the 2013 South Atlantic League All-Star Game, including three starters. Stetson Allie will play first base, Josh Bell will start in right field, and Dilson Herrera was selected as the starting shortstop. Walker Gourley was chosen as a reserve outfielder, while pitchers Orlando Castro and Tyler Glasnow were also selected to represent the Power. West Virginia, Hickory, Hagerstown, and Augusta each had six players selected by the league's managers, coaches, general managers, and media.
BRINGING BACK BARNES: Barrett Barnes was activated from the Power Disabled List on Thursday. Pittsburgh placed the outfielder on the disabled list on May 2 with a hamstring strain, which he suffered during a May 1 game against Greensboro while trying to run out an infielder grounder.
MEET MEDINA: Pittsburgh transferred Jhondaniel Medina to the Power roster on Thursday to take Jake Burnette's spot in bullpen. Medina, a right-hander from Venezuela, was acquired from Baltimore during the off-season and had not pitched above the NYPL prior to this season. Pittsburgh promoted him to Bradenton twice during the 2013 campaign, where he appeared in 10 games without factoring in a decision and held a 2.53 ERA. Pittsburgh placed Jake Burnette on the disabled list retroactive to June 3.
2013 DRAFT CONTINUES: On Thursday, the Pittsburgh Pirates selected Austin Meadows with the ninth pick of the first round in the 2013 First-Year player draft and later chose Reese McGuire with the 14th overall selection. The Buccos proceeded to pick Blake Taylor, a left-hander from Dana Hills High School in California, during the second round. Rounds three through ten took place Friday afternoon with the remaining 30 rounds being decided today.
PROMO UPDATE- JULY 4- The Power will host the Lexington Legends on July 4 at 6:05 pm. The game will be followed by a fireworks show and a concert by the Davisson Brothers Band.
POWER POINTS: Wednesday's six inning loss was the second time the Power have fallen in a 1-0 final this season and the fifth time they have been shutout... Walker Gourley went 1-3 last night and has a five game hitting streak. Gourley's on-base streak is at 18 games as well... Junior Sosa was promoted back to Bradenton on Thursday when Barrett Barnes was activated from the disabled list.
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION: Pittsburgh shutout the chicago Cubs 2-0 Friday. It was the club's 10th shutout this season, matching their total from the entire 2012 campaign... Indianapolis scored six in the eighth to beat Durham 6-5... Altoona fell 3-2 to Binghamton... Bradenton beat Fort Myers 6-5 in 10 innings on a walk-off Jose Osuna homer.
