THE LEAD OFF: West Virginia bested Greenville 4-2 on Tuesday. Tyler Glasnow struck out ten Drive batters over five inning of work as the Power won their third straight. West Virginia backed Glasnow with two runs in the second and a run in a third. The Drive scored their runs in the fifth and eighth, but the Power tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth. Pat Ludwig pitched the ninth for his first save of the year. Four West Virginia pitchers combined to strike out 16 batters; a new season high. Junior Sosa, Josh Bell, and Raul Fortunato had two hits each to pace the offense.
10 K GOLD: Tyler Glasnow's ten strikeouts on Tuesday seta new single-game high for a Power pitcher this season, surpassing Joely Rodriguez's Opening Day tally of eight against the Asheville Tourists. Glasnow's performance also marked the first time a Power pitcher had struck out double digit batters in any game since May 19, 2010 when Kyle McPherson retired 10 Delmarva Shorebirds on strikes.
DRIVE IN: West Virginia and Greenville conclude their season series today. The Power have taken the first two games of this series and four out of five from the Drive overall this year. West Virginia leads the all-time series 26-23 and have gone 15-7 at home since 2005 in the series.
CHASING 300: West Virginia is just one win away from reaching 300 home victories. The franchise holds a current mark of 299-269 at Appalachian Power Park including both regular season and playoff contests.
CASTRO HONORED: On Monday, the South Atlantic League named Orlando Castro as its' Pitcher-of-the-Week for April 29- May 5. The southpaw pitched six shutout innings on Friday in West Virginia's 3-0 win over Greensboro, striking out seven and walking none. Castro is 3-2 this season with 29 strikeouts and just one walk over 33 innings pitched as joins Stetson Allie as the second Power player to be awarded by the league this season (April 4-14).
BULLISH PEN: Between the eighth inning on Wednesday against Greensboro and the ninth inning Sunday against Greenville, West Virginia's bullpen did not allow a single run spanning 12 innings.
WINNER WINNERS: John Kuchno's six inning start Sunday was the longest of his career and marked his first professional win. Last Monday in Savannah, Tyler Glasnow pitched five shutout innings to garner his first pro victory.
BREAKING NEWS: Reports out of Pittsburgh has former Power pitcher Duke Welker set to make his Major League debut. The right-hander pitched for the Power during both the 2009 and 2010 seasons. Welker was placed on the 40-man roster this past off-season and would become the 31st former Power player to reach the Majors. He is 3-0 this season for Indianapolis and has pitched 16 innings without allowing an earned run.
PROMO UPDATE- MAY 18: The Power will host their annual WVU night on May 18 against Lexington. The first 1,000 fans through the gate will receive a Geno Smith bobblehead. All fans will have the chance to meet and greet Kevin Jones, Truck Bryant, and Da'Sean Butler. WVU Night is present by the WV Army National Guard.
POWER POINTS: Barrett Barnes was placed on the Power Disabled List on Friday, retroactive to May 2. Junior Sosa was transferred from Bradenton to the West Virginia roster on Sunday to fill the open roster spot... After Tuesday's 4-2 victory, West Virginia is now 2-13 when scoring five runs or less in a game and 2-11 in games when they do not hit a home run...
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION: Pittsburgh beat Seattle 4-1 Tuesday evening. Andrew McCutchen, Travis Snyder, and Garrett Jones drove in runs in the Bucco win... Indianapolis lost 3-1 at Scranton/ Wilkes-Barre... Altoona was rocked at Harrisburg 13-2. Jameson Taillon was hit by a line drive and removed from the game as a precaution in the fourth inning... Bradenton fell 3-1 at Dunedin. Benji Gonzalez homer in the loss.
