San Jose SaberCats News Release
SAN JOSE, Calif. â San Jose rookie WR/DB RODNEY WRIGHT was today named the AFL's U.S Army Ironman of the Week after his outstanding all-around performance in the SaberCats 83-71 win over the Dallas Desperados on Apr. 15. This marks the first time Wright has received an AFL award.
Against the Eastern Division leading Desperados, Wright (5-9, 180, Fresno St.) totaled 135 kickoff return yards, 40 field goal return yards and six catches for 52 yards for a career-high 227 all-purpose yards.
Wright was almost single-handedly responsible for the first scoring drive, returning the opening kickoff 25 yards, catching two passes for 10 and 11 yards, respectively, and then hauling in a 7-yard toss from Mark Grieb, the quarterback's 400th career touchdown pass.
On defense, Wright was just as effective, being credited with a personal-best 9.5 tackles, including several punishing hits on special teams. In the third quarter, the former Fresno State standout scooped up a Dallas fumble and returned it 15 yards, leading to another SaberCats score.
Wright has been one of a number of talented rookies on the SaberCats roster stepping in and making important contributions in their first year of action. For the season, Wright ranks third on the club in receptions (32) and receiving yards (348) despite appearing in only seven games.
San Jose travels to the Mile High City to face former QB John Dutton and the Colorado Crush on Friday in a match of conference heavyweights. The game will be televised live in the Bay Area on KBWB (WB20) at 6:00 p.m. The SaberCats return home on Friday, April 29, to face the Nashville Kats in the first of two straight home games. On Saturday, May 7, the SaberCats host division rival Los Angeles.
