Allen Wranglers News Release
ALLEN, TX- The new boys on the block just took the top spot.
With a 33-28 win over the West Texas Roughnecks, the Allen Wranglers took over the top spot in the Lonestar Division of the Indoor Football League.
Allen kicker Garrett Courtney tallied four field goals, including a 53 yard kick to start the fourth quarter. The Wrangler defense also saw solid performances; James Lancaster had four sacks and defensive back Joey Longoria hauled in his 70th career interception.
"It's not about me," Lancaster said. "Tonight we became a team."
The game came down to the wire late in the fourth quarter. Wrangler quarterback Kewan Dewberry threw a late touchdown pass to Dedrick Poole with just under a minute left in the game. It was then up to the Wrangler defense to perform and perform they did. Four Roughneck missed opportunities later, the Wrangler solidified their win and their first place ranking.
The game began with three Courtney field goals and a safety forced by Lancaster. The Wranglers didn't score touchdown until halfway through the third quarter on a run by Poole. Bobby Chase would also find the end zone for the Wranglers; Roughneck points can be attributed to Arkelon Hall, Evin Jones and Josh Floyd.
Fans at the game also saw a Roger Staubach to Drew Pearson connection. Pearson, Staubach and Tony Hill played catch on the field pre-game before Pearson took Wrangler introduction honors. Staubach and Pearson also re-enacted their legendary "Hail Mary" pass at halftime.
The Roughnecks will play Omaha at home next week; the Wranglers will travel to Nebraska for a non-division game. Allen will return home on Apr. 23, 2011 for a matchup against the Wichita Wild. Kickoff for that game is set for 7:35 at Allen Event Center.
